Dyspepsia

• Dyspepsia, the medical term for indigestion,


refers to discomfort or pain in the upper
abdomen, often after eating or drinking. It is not
a disease but group of symptoms, like heart
burn, bloating ,nausea , regurgitation ,fullness.
• Lifestyle tips and medication can help manage it.
Drugs that inhibit gastric acid secretion

H2 receptor blockers: Cimetidine, Ranitidine

Proton pump inhibitors: Omeprazole, Pantoprazole

Anticholinergics : Pirenzepine

Prostaglandin analogues: Misoprostol


Drugs that neutralize gastric acid (Antacids)

Systemic:

• Sodium bicarbonate, sodium citrate

Non systemic:

• Magnesium hydroxide, Mag. Trisilicate,


Aluminium,hydroxide gel, Magaldrate
• Magnesium

• Diarrhea, dehydration, hypermagnesemia, renal stones

• Aluminum

• Constipation, intestinal impaction, anorexia, weakness

• Calcium carbonate

• Constipation, rebound hyperacidity, metabolic


• alkalosis, hypercalcemia, renal stones, fecal impaction

• Sodium bicarbonate:

• Systemic alkalosis, sodium overload


CONTRAINDICATIONS

• Magnesium

• Renal insufficiency

• Aluminum

• Gastric outlet obstruction

• Sodium

• Hypertension, CHF, sodium restricted diets


Prokinetic drugs
A prokinetic agent (also gastroprokinetic
agent, gastrokinetic agent or propulsive) is a type
of drug whichenhances gastrointestinal motility
by increasing the frequency or strength of
contractions, but without disrupting their
rhythm.
Prokinetic drugs
1.Metoclopramide
2.Domperidone
They both are dopamine antagonists.
3.Erythromycin a macrolid is also a prokinetic
agent activates the motilin receptors in G.I.T
