Specific gravity of asphalt concrete

 References(ASTM Standards):
1. D 2726
2. D 1189
Introduction:
 Specific gravity is the ratio of the weight of a given
volume of asphalt concrete to the weight of an equal
volume of water.

 Bulk Specific Gravity(Gmb)—as determined by this test

method, the ratio of the mass of a given volume of
material at room temperature to the mass of an equal
volume of water at the same temperature.
Equipment:

 Balance
 Water Bath
 Towel/Large absorbent Cloth/Tissue
 Sample container(Perforated )
 Stop watch
Test Specimen :

 A virgin cylindrical specimen of diameter 100 mm and height 62 mm,

compacted by gyratory compactor. It was free from any crack and foreign
materials.
Procedure:

1.Dry weight of the specimen was taken ( 2559 gm)

And denoted this mass as A.
Procedure: (con..)

2. Mass of Specimen in Water(SSD in water)—the specimen was immersed in a water bath at room temp.
for 3 min then the mass was determined by weighing in water. Designated that mass as C(1471 gm)
Procedure: (con..)

3. Mass of Saturated Surface Dry Specimen in Air(SSD in air )— The specimen was taken
out side ,then Surface was dried by blotting quickly with a tissue and the mass was
determined by weighing in air. Designated that mass as B(2567gm).
Calculation and Result :

 Bulk Specific Gravity ,

2.3348
Discussion :

 All the readings were taken carefully.

 Temperature of the room was constant as we taken data without delay.
 Typical value of Gmb of asphalt mixure ranges between 2.200 to 2.500 .
