This document provides a summary of a proposed project to widen and strengthen 12 km of an existing bituminous road in Ballia, India. The project will be undertaken by the Public Works Department and involves widening the existing 3 meter road to 5.5 meters. It describes the proposed pavement layers which will include granular sub-base, wet mix macadam, prime coat, dense bituminous macadam, and surface course layers. Construction is estimated to take 12 months to complete. Key equipment needed for the project includes a hot mix batch plant and rollers.

 To learn about the various types of equipment used.
 To learn new skills at the site.
Public Works Department (U.P.)
 The Public Works Department conducts the construction, improvement, strengthening and
maintenance of roads and bridges.
 The responsibility of construction of certain buildings of the state government and their
maintenance is also upon this department.
 The department undertakes the maintenance of National Highways passing through Uttar
Pradesh which are not covered by the National Highways Authority for which funds are

ROAD

 An open way, usually surfaced with asphalt or concrete, providing

passage from one place to another.
Classification of Roads:-
The roads can be classified based on the basis of following
factors:-
• Materials
• Location & function
• Traffic volume
Types of Roads Based on Materials:-
• Earthen Roads
• Gravel Roads
• WBM Roads
• Bituminous Roads
• Concrete Roads
Types of Roads Based on Location & Function:-
• National Highway

• State Highway

• District Roads

• Major District Road (MDR)

• Other District Road (ODR)

• Rural Road or Village Roads

Types of Roads Based on Traffic Volume:-
• Light Traffic Roads
The roads which are carrying 400 vehicles daily on an average is called light traffic roads.

• Medium Traffic Roads

Road carrying 400 to 1000 vehicles per day then it is said to be medium traffic road.

• High Traffic Roads

Road is carrying is more than 1000 vehicles per day then it is considered as high traffic
road.

INTODUCTION TO BITUMEN
oBitumen is a black or dark colored solid or viscous cementitious

substance having an adhesive properties.

oIt consists chiefly high molecular weight hydrocarbons derived from

distillation of petroleum or natural asphalt.

oIt is a semi-solid hydrocarbon product produced by removing the lighter

fractions (such as liquid petroleum gas, petrol and diesel) from heavy

crude oil during the refining process.

Granular Sub-Base (GSB)
 Gravel shall consist of hard, durable and sound rock fragments,
free from dirt, organic matter, shale and other deleterious substances.
 Mixture of aggregates and dust laid on sub grade with the help of
grader. After that compaction is done by using vibratory roller till to
get the dry density 2.16 gm/cc.

WMM
Wet Mix Macadam (WMM) Consist of laying and Compacting
Clean, Crushed Graded Aggregate Granular Material, Pre Mixed
with water to a dense mass on prepared Subgrade. Then it is
compacted properly to obtain maximum dry density of 2.17 g/cc
and OMC is 7%.
Prime Coat
It is an application of low viscous cutback bitumen to an absorbent surface like
granular bases on which binder layer is placed. Unlike tack coat, prime coat
penetrates into the layer below, plugs the voids, and forms a water tight surface

DBM
The DBM is laid with the help of sensor paver. The leveling is done while
laying for maintaining camber. It is laid for a thickness of 50 mm
Compaction is done by Roller.
Tack Coat
It is a very light application of asphalt, usually asphalt
emulsion diluted with water. It provides proper bonding
between two layers of binder course and must be thin,
uniformly cover the entire surface, and set very fast.
SURFACE COURSE
 Bituminous concrete is laid on the Dense bituminous macadam
with the help of sensor paver with a thickness of 53mm and it was
compacted by asphalt compactor up to a thickness of [Link] is the
top most coat on which the vehicles [Link] coat is applied on it
to prevent the entry of water in it.
