Introduction
 The operation theater should be managed
properly before an operation of an infected
case.

 An infected case may spread infection very

quickly if proper precautionary measures are
not taken
Precautionary Measures
 Notify Ot staff

 Notify Nursing staff

 Personal protective equipment

 Sterilization and disinfection

 Fumigation
Which cases are infected ?
 The patients which have MRSA( multiple drug
resistant bacteria)

 Patients with TB ( tuberculosis)

 Patients with Covid-19

Notify Staff
 It is important for the nursing and operation
theater staff to know in advance about the
infected case.

 It should be made sure that the patient is

being treated in source isolation in the ward.
Decontamination
 All the surgical instruments being used
should be sterilized

 All the anesthesia equipment being used

should be disinfected properly.
PPE
 All the staff present in the OT should wear
personal protective equipment.

 This includes Gown, gloves, face mask

Fumigation
 It should be performed after surgery.

 If not then it should be at least done after any

infectious case has been operated in the OT.

 It is a form of gaseous sterilization to kill

micro organisms and prevent microbial
growth on surface of floors and walls
Restriction of Entry in OT
 The minimum necessary number of people
should be present.

 No extra personnel should be allowed

 This minimizes the risk of infection

Antibiotic Prophylaxis
 It is the use of antibiotics before surgery to
prevent a bacterial infection.

 Example: Cephazolin,gentamicin
Communication Skills
 There should be a good communication with
the staff present in the operation theater.

 It may include: surgeon, scrub nurse,

circulator, anesthesiologist.
OT equipment
 All the Ot equipment should be checked
properly before the operation to make sure
that there is fault.

 It may include OT table, OT lights, Anesthesia

machine, Cardiac monitor, Diathermy, suction
machine,
History Of Patient
 The complete medical history of the patient
to be taken before the surgery to make sure
that there are no complications during the
surgery.
