COEFFICIENT OF

VARIATION
Coefficient of Variation

• It is a measure of relative variation expressed

as a percentage.
• It is used to compare which group is more varied
• It is the ratio of the standard variation and the
mean multiplied by 100%. CV=(s/x) 100
Example: compare the variation in terms of
height
MALE FEMALE
A 162cm 155cm
B 151cm 145cm
C 169cm 148cm
D 162cm 145cm
E 175cm 147cm
MEAN 162cm 148cm
STANDARD DEVIATION 9cm 5cm
COEFFICIENT OF VARIATION
CV= SD/x̄ * 100%

MALE FEMALE
CV = 9/162 * 100% CV = 5/148 * 100%
CALCULATION = 0.055 * 100% = 0.033 * 100
= 5.5% = 3.3%

*Therefore, male heights are more varied than female

heights
