QUARTILES

Quartiles
These are values that divide an ordered set of observations into four
equal parts. They are denoted by Q1, Q2… for data which fall on 25%,
50%,…
Steps:
1. Arrange the data in an increasing order.
2. Solve for the value of L, where L=mn/100 for percentile; mn/10 for
Decile; and mn/4 for quartile.
Example: Find P30,D4,Q3
59 79
62 90
67 92
69 95
69
59,62,67,69,69,79,90,92,95
P30=
L=30(9)/100=2.7. Since 2.7 is fractional, the next higher
integer will be used. Therefore, the next is 3. So, this
means that the 3rd value in the set of data is the 30th
percentile. This also means that 30% of the values fall
below 67
59,62,67,69,69,79,90,92,95
D4=
 L=4(9)/10=3.6. Since 3.6 is fractional, the next higher
integer will be used. Therefore, the next is 4. So, this means
that the 4th value in the set of data is the 4th decile. This also
means that 40% of the values fall below 69.
59,62,67,69,69,79,90,92,95
Q3=
 L=3(9)/4=6.75. Since 6.75 is fractional, the next higher
integer will be used. Therefore, the next is 7. So, this means
that the 7th value in the set of data is the 3rd quartile. This
also means that 75% of the values fall below 90.
