Equations

By Meer Yaseen
Definition and Introduction:

Considered to be one of the simplest forms in algebra, an equation is

a mathematical statement that includes numbers, an equal sign and
sometimes a variable(s); In simpler terms, a mathematical sentence
that has two sides, between both sides being an equal sign.
In an equation two different terms are equated, or equaled to each
other.
There are many different types of equations, but the one that we will
be focusing on today will be Algebraic Equations.
In an algebraic equations, a variable will always be present, without
that variable it would be called a numerical equation rather than an
algebraic one
What is a variable?

A variable is usually symbolized by a letter, a variable represents a

value this value is usually a number but in some cases could be a
command or a statement.
Lets take an example: say you have a box, this box could contain
anything, but its closed, so you have no idea what could be inside the
box, the box would be called the variable, and whatever is inside the
box would be called the value.
Examples:
Solve for in the following equation:

Usually when solving algebraic equations you would put numbers on

one side and variables on the other, so lets take a go at this step by
step:
Next work is to isolate the variable:

After this it is preferable to check if your answer is correct, to do this

simply plug the value of the variable into the variable in the original
equation:

So with this last step we understand that our solution is correct.

Lets try something else:

Solve for in the following equation:

First things first is to simplify the parentheses, to do this simply multiply what's outside
the parentheses by what's inside it like so:
As taught, the next step is to take the smaller variable to the larger one:

Simplify:

Now isolate the variable and solve for it:

To find out if our answer is correct simply plug in the value of the variable into
the original equation:

Simplify:

Lets solve another form of question:

Solve for in the following equation:

Simply isolate the variable and solve:

We can now check the answer:
