Is there a better way to change the mindset of humanity
than education?

• Knowledge and learning are humanity’s most significant renewable

resources for responding to challenges and inventing alternatives.

• Education does more than react to a changing world; education

transforms the world.

• To transform the world, we need a new approach to education. A new

way of looking at education could bring our fragmented world together
and help us to develop a coherent vision toward a better world.

and personal growth. YUOE 23
Background of WPE
• The concept of WPE roots in ancient philosophical traditions, particularly in Eastern
philosophical systems such as Buddhism, Taoism, and Confucianism. These traditions
emphasized the importance of cultivating the whole person, including the spiritual, moral,
intellectual, and physical dimensions.
• In the Western context, the idea of WPE emerged in the late 19th century as a response to the
narrow, disciplinary-focused education that was prevalent at the time.
• Education should be based on the principle of "learning by doing," and that it should be
designed to develop the whole person, rather than just imparting knowledge and skills.
• In the 1960s and 1970s, WPE became a prominent theme which emphasized the importance of
personal growth, self-actualization, and the integration of the different dimensions of human
experience.
• Today, WPE is recognized as an important educational approach that aims to cultivate the
full potential of the individual and promote their overall well-being.
• Relevant in the context of the rapidly changing and complex global environment, where
individuals are called upon to navigate multiple social, economic, and environmental challenges
