Education for Sustainable Development

What is Education for Sustainable Development?

 Education for Sustainable Development allows every human being to acquire the knowledge, skills, attitudes and values necessary to shape a
sustainable future (UNESCO, 2014)
 It means including key sustainable development issues into teaching and learning; for example, climate change, disaster risk reduction, biodiversity,
poverty reduction, and sustainable consumption.
 ESD is essential for the achievement of a sustainable society and is therefore desirable at all levels of formal education and training, as well as in non-
formal and informal learning
 ESD is about the learning needed to maintain and improve our quality of life and the quality of life of generations to come
Why is education important for sustainability?

 Providing the right information and education can change people's values and behaviors, encouraging them to adopt more sustainable lifestyles.
 It can also break the cycle of poverty, malnutrition and disease that affects so many worldwide.
7 Principles of ESD
 Transformation and Change:
- People should be empowered to make changes in the lives of themselves, their schools and their local communities.
- Its goal is to strive towards taking action for a sustainable future.
 Lifelong Learning for All:
- ESD takes place in formal and informal learning environments all over the place, including in workplaces, community meeting, sporting clubs, and so
forth.
- It is for young, middle aged and old. And learning about it never ends.
 Systems Thinking:
- This is a term that means we are all interconnected.

- Ecological systems, political systems, economic systems and cultural systems are all connected.
- We are connected to each other and the environment
 A Better Future:
- Working towards a future in which we can live in balance and harmony with our environment.
 Critical Thinking:
The need to educate people to think critically and laterally to find new ways of doing things and new solutions to get us back on track to
sustainability.
 Participation:
- ESD encourages inquiry based and project based learning in which we are empowered to learn by taking action.
 Partnerships for Change:

- The need to work together to create change.

- Academes need to team up with each other,
-Governments need to partner up with community groups
- All need to work together with the goal of creating a sustainable future.
Why education is the key to sustainable development
 education system broadens access to opportunities, improves health, and bolsters the resilience of communities
 fuels economic growth in a way that can reinforce and accelerate these processes.
 provides the skills people need to thrive in the new sustainable economy, working in areas such as renewable energy, smart agriculture, forest
rehabilitation, the design of resource-efficient cities, and sound management of healthy ecosystems
 education can bring about a fundamental shift in how we think, act, and discharge our responsibilities toward one another and the planet.
 The UNESCO-led UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development, which began in 2005, was explicitly intended to instill in every human
being “the knowledge, skills, attitudes, and values necessary to shape a sustainable future.”
 An ambitious sustainable development agenda, together with a legally binding global climate deal, could go a long way toward catalyzing such a
movement.
 Effective educational programs that instill in future generations the importance of restoring Earth’s balance and delivering a prosperous future for the
many
