DENG320 Week 9
Chapter 8: Breakthroughs
Building New Words with Prefixes and
Suffixes
Word building can greatly extend your English vocabulary.
 In the last chapter, you practiced forming adjectives from
nouns by adding suffixes to the roots of words.
 Now extend this strategy and practice finding the root in a
verb, noun, adjective, or adverb and adding prefixes and
suffixes to make related forms.
Examples:
connect, disconnect, connection
month, monthly, semimonthly
prove, disprove, approve, proven
Finding Evidence to Disprove False
Arguments
 No matter how good a person’s work is or what prize he or
she wins, there will always be people who will say negative
things.
 In such cases, that person may want to disprove those
negative or false things.
 If you have understood a reading well, you should be able
to find evidence from it to disapprove arguments that are
false.
 Disproving false arguments with evidence helps you
practice your skills for argumentation and persuasion.
Identifying Compound Words
 Remember that compound words are words made up of
two smaller words.
 Some have a hyphen, but most do not.
 Usually, it is not hard to guess their meaning if you know
what the smaller words mean.
Examples:

rainfall grandmother skateboard

moonlight basketball schoolhouse

mailbox railroad sunflower

Separating Fact from
Opinion
The difference between fact and opinion is not always clear,
but some general rules can help you distinguish between
them.
General rules:
1- General statements that can be checked online or in a
reference book about past or present events are usually facts;
statements about the future are generally opinions, since the
future is uncertain.
2- Statements that include the modals may, might, or could,
or qualifiers such as perhaps, maybe, possibly, or probably
are opinions.
Separating Fact from
Opinion
3- Statements based on evidence (research, case studies,
experiments, questionnaires) need to be evaluated. If they are
based on only one person’s research, they should be
considered opinions. If they are based on a great deal of
research and if most experts agree, then they can be
considered facts.
4- The line between fact and opinion is sometimes open to
discussion. Time, place, and culture influence these limits for
all societies.
Scanning a Timeline
A timeline is a chart
that shows a sequence
of events and when
they occurred. It is
presented in
chronological order.
You can scan it like
you would scan a story
or a graph to extract
the information you
are looking for. https://images.app.goo.gl/R2xeF8dcA3AH6bSv6
Reading for Speed and Fluency: Viewing Words in Groups or
For this timed reading, try out a skill that can help you read
Clusters
faster: viewing words in groups or clusters. Try not to read
word by word, but instead to see groups of words at once.
 So instead of reading this sentence one word at a time, like
this:
The-topic-of-thought-is-one-area-of-psychology-and-many-
observers-have-considered-this-aspect-in-connection-with-
robots-and-computers.
 Try to read the sentence in four sections like this:
The topic of thought is one area of psychology and many
observers have considered this aspect in connection with
robots and computers.
Writing Tip: Clearly Separate a Summary from Your
Opinion
It is important to distinguish between the summary of a
reading and your opinion of the reading.
 A summary or summary statement goes over the main
points that an author makes without expressing an
opinion.
 Often a summary statement can be a good lead-in to
writing about your opinion on the author’s point.
 However, the summary itself should not include your
opinion.
