Lesson 6:

Jesus’
Commissioning
of His Disciples
The Great Commission (Matthew 28:16-20)
Then the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the
mountain where Jesus had told them to go. When they
saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted.
Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in
heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go
and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the
name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy
Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have
commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to
the very end of the age.”
Christ did not only call his
disciples to follow Him. His
final words to them are
words of missioning: “you
will receive power when the
Holy Spirit comes upon you,
and you will be my
witnesses in Jerusalem,
throughout Judea and
Samaria, and to the ends of
the earth.”
Jesus commissions His
disciples to continue His
mission until the end of
time.

They are to spread the

Good News- all the truths
about Jesus and that
forever, He remains .
The are authentic witnesses of
Christ and their successors
should be the same as them
empowered by the Holy Spirit.

Today, as members of the

Church we share in the mission
of Christ as priest, prophet, and
king, and we call this work an
“apostolate”.
The call to discipleship is
engaging in the missionary
task of the Church.

As disciples, we are
committed to participate in
the priestly, and kingly
mission of Jesus.
Threefold
mission of Christ
Christ’s mission

By virtue of Baptism, we all

share in the threefold
mission of Christ as priest,
prophet, and king. We, the
Church, the New people of
God, are “priestly, prophetic,
and kingly people” (CFC
1382).
Christ’s mission
How important is your
baptism? It is your personal
identification with the death,
burial, and resurrection of
Jesus Christ. Baptism doesn't
save you—salvation comes
also by faith (
Ephesians 2:8-9).
Christ’s mission

Your guilt before God is

removed the moment you
trust in Christ. But baptism is
your personal testimony to,
and the inward assurance of,
your passage from the old
life to the new life.
Our Mission as
Priestly People
Priestly people

As priestly people,
we are to offer
spiritual sacrifices for
the greater glory of
God and salvation of
all.
Priestly people

Empowered by the
Sacrament of Confirmation
and strengthened by the
Holy Eucharist, we are to
persevere in prayer,
participate actively in
liturgical celebrations,
Priestly people

As sharers of priestly
mission of Christ, we
must present ourselves
as a sacrifice, living, holy,
and pleasing God and
bearing witness to Christ.
Priestly people

Other spiritual sacrifices include meditation on

the Word of God, the root of our faith as
Christians, personal prayers, and a sincere and
meaningful celebration of the Holy Mass, which
means not only attending the rite, but
participating in it in a “full, active, and
conscious” manner. (Sacrosanctum Concilium,
14)
Priestly people
There are seven Sacraments, The Sacraments
are classified as:
• Sacraments Christian Initiation (Baptism,
Confirmation and the Eucharist),
• Sacraments of Healing (Reconciliation and
Anointing of the Sick), and
• Sacraments of Commitment (Matrimony
and Holy Orders).
Priestly people
We live out our
priesthood by
receiving the
Sacraments, praying
and giving thanks,
and witnessing a holy
life.
Priestly people

The Holy Mass is more than

any other prayer that we can
recite or meditate on
everyday. It is the highest
form of worship because it is
only within the Holy Mass
that we encounter Jesus in
multiple presences.
Priestly people

We Catholics believe
that when they receive
the Sacrament of the
Eucharist they are
receiving the body and
blood of Christ in the
form of bread and wine.
Our Mission as
Prophetic People
Prophetic people

As prophetic people, we
are to spread the love of God
through the gifts of tongue
with sufficient understanding
and strong conviction of the
truths of our faith with the
grace from the Holy Spirit.
Prophetic people

From a biblical point of

view, a prophet is
someone who speaks in
God’s name under His
guidance and inspiration.
Prophetic people

The saints, who were

once sinners are our
models in spreading the
word of God through
concrete actions in our
daily life.
Prophetic people

Now they share in the glory of the

Risen Christ in heaven because
they lives a life of love both in
words and in deeds manifested in
their unwavering faith in God,
compassion, and loving service to
people from all walks of life.
“Actions speak louder than
words”.
Prophetic people

Whatever we do, whether big or

small, affects the people around
us directly or indirectly.
But more than simple acts of
kindness, we are called to speak
the truth to rectify the mistakes
of others in seeking social justice
especially for the
underprivileged.
Prophetic people

As Christian prophets in our

time, we are called to search for
the truth, speak the truth, stand
for the truth, and encourage
others to believe in the same
truth, even it there my be times
when others may turn their back
on us.
Prophetic people

Along the process and in the

end, these truths will justify and
free us. No one is more free than
those who walk in the truth.
Ephesians 4:15
“Instead, speaking the truth in love, we
will grow to become in every respect the
mature body of him who is the head, that
is, Christ.”
Prophetic people

We are called to spread

the Good News not only
by our words but more so
by our way of living as
Christians.
Our Mission as
Kingly People
Kingly People

As kingly people our

main endeavor is to serve
as Jesus did, “to be king
is to minister, to serve”.
We are called to serve to
the best of our ability with
love and joy rooted in the
love of God.
Kingly People

As Christians, we are
called to serve with out 3
Ts:
• Time
• Talent
• Treasure
Kingly People

First T is for Time. In

whatever, form of service,
big or small, time is a basic
necessity. Those who
generously offer their time
for service, bear much fruit.
Kingly People

Second T is for Talent. We

need to consider our
giftedness as persons in order
for us to serve to the fullest.
Created in the image and
likeness of God, each of us
unique in many ways.
Kingly People

Third T is for Treasure. Aware

of the reality that the Church
exists through her members
materially, we are to support
the Church in terms of
material goods and monetary
assistance.
Kingly People

The amount that we give does

not need to be huge all the
time. Whether big or small,
God loves a humble and
cheerful giver. He rewards
those who give out of genuine
love, not simply to be freed
from guilt or to attain fame.
SUMMARY

Like the apostles, Jesus also commissioned

us to the task of evangelization. The mission
mandate He gave to His apostles was very
clear, that our mission too, is to proclaim His
kingdom by doing well our priestly, prophetic,
and to work for justice and peace.
