2
Basic Types of Research

• There are different ways of classifying research,

however there is an overlap and no clear cut in
between each research types.

• Research can be classified based on

– Goal: Basic and Applied research
– Approaches: Qualitative, Quantitative
– Designs: Experimental, Quasi-Exp, Non-Experimental
– Type of Data: Primary/Field, Secondary/Desk research
– Field of Study: Educational. Behavioral, Health science…

3
Basic and Applied Research

• Basic Research: Fundamental/ Pure research

– Concerned with the discovery of new knowledge and formulation of a
theory , invention of a new method or technique, or reflection; examination
of an existing knowledge in a different social or organizational context.
– It is done for Expanding Knowledge, Curiosity or Interest,
– E.g. Researches related to Technology

• Applied Research
– Its purpose is discovering, interpreting and developing methods and
systems for solving practical problems on a wide variety of real life
situations.
– Where adding additional knowledge is secondary goal
– E.g. Most medical researches.

4
Qualitative and Quantitative Researches
• Qualitative Research:
– Used to describe various aspects of human behavior and other
factors in social science and behavioral studies
– Results are in the form of narration or description/Subjectivity.
– It usually involves interviews, discussions and observations
– Help to discover feelings, thoughts, insights and meanings
