Statement of a Problem
• It is the first and major section in the research
proposal.
• It is important to briefly state a research problem
because
– It is the foundation for further development of the research
proposal; objectives, methodology, work plan, budget..
– It makes easier to find informations and reports of similar
studies from which your study design can benefit
– Enables to systematically justify why it needs investigation
– Enables to clearly define what the results will be where it is
important to convince community members and political
leaders

Contents: Statement of the Problem
• A brief description about, Socio-economic, Culture,
Health status and health care system; If and only if
these are relevant to the problem, it is better to
support with statistical figures.

• A concise description of the nature of the problem


– Any discrepancy, what is and what should be
– The magnitude of affected population
– The distribution, the mostly affected population segment
– The severity of the problem and
– The influence or impact the problem if it exists
