What is a
research
problem?
?
Problem
anything w/c gives a person a feeling
of discomfort

could be a situation that needs to be


changed or anything that is not working
as expected
As researcher, problems could be:
• conditions you want to improve
• difficulties you want to eliminate
• questions for w/c you want answers
• information gaps you wish to fill
• theories you wish to validate
• an issue that should be settled
• question about an unknown characteristics of a
population
• about factors that explain the presence or
occurrence of a phenomenon

Defining the Research Problem
• explains the existence and seriousness of the
problem
• The problem definition must show that the problem
needs serious attention because many people are or
will be affected by it.
• the following questions are usually answered:
 Does the problem really exist? What are the
evidences of the problem’s existence?
 Is the problem serious? Who and how many are
affected by it?
 What places are affected? How widespread is it?
 How often does the problem occur?
