Informal Communication –Grapevine

Man is a civilized animal. Wherever he meets

with the other men he communicates.
As a result these arises a secondary network of
information in the organization.
This network represents informal channel of
communication, which exist side by side with
formal channel of communication.
Informal communication is also known as
Grapevine.
 Reasons of Grapevine
1. Feelings of Dissatisfaction among the
employees.
2. Bad reputation of the company.
3. Lack of Confidence in employees.
4. Feeling of insecurity in employees.
5. Feeling of isolation in employees.
6. Favoring of the selecting employees.
 Grapevine Chains
According to Keith Davis Grapevine chains are of
four types:

1. Single Strand Chain: in a this type ,information flow through a long
line of person to the ultimate receiver. it follows man single channels.

person in the centre to all other around him.

3. Probability Chain: Here one person talks randomly other people and so
information passes further .
4. Cluster Chain: It involves selected group of people. A
person communicates to the selected group of people.
