Vegetative Propagation

What is Vegetative Propagation?
Vegetative propagation is a method of asexual reproduction in which new
plants are obtained from new parts of the plants, without the help of any
reproductive organs.
The vegetative parts means leaf, stem and roots. It occurs only in plants
and thus called vegetative reproduction.
There are two types of vegetative reproduction.

2
Natural Vegetative Propagation
This occurs when plants grow and develop naturally without any human
interference. Natural vegetative propagation can occur through different
methods, depending on the plant species and the plant structure involved.

3
Reproduction by Stem
Some plants have stems that can grow horizontally on the ground or
underground, and produce buds at the nodes. These buds can develop into
shoots and roots, forming new plants.
Ex: mint plant, potato, ginger etc
Reproduction by Leaves
Some plants have leaves that can produce buds at the margins or along
the veins. These buds can detach from the parent leaf and grow into new
plants. For example, bryophyllum is a plant that propagate by leaves
Reproduction by Roots
Some plants have modified roots that can store food and produce buds.
These buds can grow into new plants when detached from the parent
plant or when the parent plant dies. For example, sweet potato and dahlia
are plants that propagate by roots.
Artificial Vegetative Propagation
Artificial vegetative propagation is a type of plant reproduction that
involves human intervention. It is a way of producing new plants from
the vegetative parts of the parent plant, such as the roots, stems, or leaves,
by using different techniques
Cutting
This is a method of cutting a part of a plant, usually a stem or a leaf, and
planting it in the soil or water. The cut part can develop roots and grow
into a new plant. Some plants that can be propagated by cutting are roses,
sugarcane, and mint.
Grafting
This is a method of joining the shoot system of one plant to the root
system of another plant. The plants are cut at an angle and placed
together, then wrapped with a tape or a cloth. The tissues of the scion and
the stock fuse together and form a new plant. Some plants that can be
propagated by grafting are apples, mangoes, and roses
Layering
This is a method of bending the stem of a plant and covering it with soil.
The stem can produce roots at the point where it is buried. The rooted
part of the stem can be detached from the parent plant and grow into a
new plant. Some plants that can be propagated by layering are
raspberries, strawberries, and jasmine.
