Let’s start with some facts about Islam

Islam is the second


biggest religion in the
world

Followers of Islam are


called Muslims.
The word Islam means ‘submission to the will
of God.’
Muslim’s follow a sacred text called
the Qur'an.

The Qur’an is divided into 114


chapters.

Sometimes the Qur’an is divided


into 30 roughly equal sections. This
makes it easier for Muslims to read
the Qur’an each month, where they
will read a different section each
day.
Who do Muslims worship?
Muslims believe there is one true
God, they call him by the Arabic
word for God which is Allah.

The most important practice for Muslims are
the Five Pillars of Islam.

The Five Pillars of Islam are five


obligations that Muslims must
follow if they are to lead a good life
according to Islam.
Zakat

Salat
The first Pillar is Shahadah.

This is the requirement that


Muslims sincerely recite the
Muslim profession of faith.

“There is no God but Allah, and


Muhammad is his messenger.”
The second Pillar is Salat.

This is the requirement that


Muslims pray 5 times a day.

The 5 times a Muslim must pray


are:

1.Before sunrise
2.Midday
3.The late part of the afternoon
4.Just after sunset
5.Between sunset and midnight
The third Pillar is Zakat.

This is the requirement that


Muslims give a percentage of
their wealth to charity. Muslims
are expected to give 2.5% of
their wealth each year.
The fourth Pillar is Sawm.

This is the requirement that


Muslims must fast during
Ramadan.
The fourth Pillar is Hajj.

This is the requirement that


Muslims must make a pilgrimage
to Mecca once in their lives if
they can afford it and are
physically able.
Muslims believe that Allah has chosen certain people
throughout history to teach mankind about the beliefs of
Islam. These people are called the Prophets of Islam.

Muslims believe that Jesus was not


the son of God but one of Allah’s
prophets. Other Prophets of Islam
are:
Adam
Noah
Abraham
Moses
The last prophet to be on earth is
believed to be Muhammad who lived
between the years 570 - 632
