HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
• Islam is a monotheistic religion that
originated in the Middle East in the 7th
century.

• Islam is the second largest religion in the


world

The Life of
Muhammad
• Historic records of Islam date from the
time of the prophet Mohammad, who
was born in Mecca, in what is now
Saudi Arabia, in 570.
• Beginning at age 40, he began
receiving revalations from
ALLAH, the Arabic word of
GOD,through the angel Gabriel.

SCRIPTURES
The Qur'an
• The Qur'an is the holy book of Islam,
believed to be the direct word of Allah. It
is composed of 114 chapters, or suras,
and is the primary source of Islamic law
and doctrine.
The Qur'an is divided into two parts:
the Meccan suras, which were
revealed to Muhammad in Mecca,
and the Medinan suras, which were
revealed in Medina.
The Hadith
• the collection of the deeds and
sayings of Muhammad and his
followers (“traditional reports or
sayings”) and is the second
source of shari’a law

BELIEFS/DOCTRINES
• Islam began as a way of life (din) for its
followers which God intended for his
creation from the very beginning
The belief of one God.
The most fundamental teaching of
Islam is to worship and believe in one
God. For a Muslim to reconsider in
believing Allah, is a massive sin.

Muslims believe that God created
concealed creatures called Angels,
who work vigorously to care for his
kingdom.

sends his guidance through
human prophets throughout
the world

• Muslims believe that God sends his
wisdom and knowledge down
though books. E.g. Psalms, Torah,
and the Gospel.

• After one rises from the dead, God will have
the right to judge them fro who they are.
Islam believes that if an individual does not
believe in God, they will be eternally
punished in the fires of Hell.

Islam
Profession of
Faith (shahada)

The belief that "There is no God but


Allah; Muhammad is the
messenger of Allah" is known as
shahada.
Prayer (Salat)
• In Islam, Muslims pray facing Mecca five times a
day: at dawn, noon, mid-afternoon, sunset, and
after dark.
• In prayers, Muslims read different chapter (Sura)
of the Quran. Men pray at the mosque and
women are welcome but they don't need to pray
at the mosque rather they perform prayers at
home.

• On Friday, after the noon prayer, Imam
recites the lines from the Quran and
delivers the message of God to the
people.
Alms (Zakat)
• In Islam, Muslims are required to give a
fixed amount from their money to the
needy and poor people. Muslims, who
have enough money, help other people by
giving them food, clothes, build houses
and does charity work for other members.
Fasting (sawn)
• During the daylight hours or ramadan
the ninth month of the Islamic calendar,
all healthy adults muslims are required
to obtain from food and drink.
Pilgrimage
(Hajj)
Muslims, who are financially able and healthy, are
required to perform Hajj at least once in their lives.
They visit the city of Meccaand do Hajj according to the
instructions given by God. Muslims gather around the
Ka'ba in Mecca in the final month of the islamic
calendar.

SUBDIVISIONS

• Similar to most major


religions, Islam also has sects
Sunni Muslims (The Sunnis)

Majority of Muslims, around 87% to 90% of the


entirety of Islam believers,
belong to the Sunni denomination. The Sunnis
(“Followers of the Smooth
Path”)
The Sunnis believe that any Muslim can be a ruler
and he does not need
to prove his lineage to Muhammad as long as he

Shi’a (The Shi’ites)

The Shi’ite Muslims are the largest faction


within the Islam religion that
separated from the rest of the community
The main Shi’ite sects are the Seveners, Twelvers¸and
‘Ibadis. The Seveners believe that there were seven imams.
They are mostly found in India, Yemen, and parts of Africa.
Meanwhile, the Twelvers claim that there are twelve imams
with most believers located in Iran. Finally, the ‘Ibadis
believe that the community may elect any appropriate
Muslim as imam. They are mostly
found in Oman
Sufi
Muslims whose concern mainly dwell for a mystical
union with God are collectively called Sufis. Their
name originate from the word suf that means
“woolen” since they wore coarse wool garments or
robes to symbolize poverty and denunciation of
worldly pleasures (Hopfe 1983). A Sufi can be a
Sunni or Shi’ite Muslim.
