WHAT DOES ‘TENSE’ MEAN?

• In the English language, the word ‘tense’ is used to denote a


characteristic of the verb in a sentence. The tense of a verb is used
to depict the particular time in which a specific event is taking
place.

• About ‘ Tense ’ word.


The word tense is derived from Latin word ‘Tempus’ Means ‘Time’.
CLASSIFICATIONS OF TENSES

•Tenses are the form of a verb taken to show The time


of an action.

Hence , There are three types of Tenses :


Present tense
Past tense
FROM THE ABOVE WE CAN UNDERSTAND THE THREE TYPES OF TENSE
TYPES OF TENSES
• Total in one tense there are 4 tenses. So, we have 12 Teses in English
language.
• Each Tense has it’s own Usage.
• Each 3 Tenses as Four types ;
1.Indefinite Tense
2.Continuous Tense
3.Perfect Tense
4.Perfect continuous Tense
WHAT DOES 4 TENSES MEAN?
• The Indefinite tense means, This Tense does not indicate whether the
action is complete or not.
• The continuous tense means ,It shows that the action is still going on.
• The perfect Tense indicates The action which is just completed or
finished.
• The perfect continuous Tense indicates that action began in the past
and is still going on.

SIMPLE PRESENT TENSE
• Formula : Subject+verb1(V1)+Object

• It is used to express universal truths


• Eg : He runs daily.
• It is also used to express Habitual actions even.
• Eg: Everyday He use to jog around the fields.
PRESENT CONTINUOUS TENSE

• Formula Subject+ is/am/are+V1+ing+object

• It is used to express an action which is happening in


present or extending over a period of time.
Eg : I am working on PPT
PRESENT PERFECT TENSE

• Formula subject + Have/Has + V3 +Object

• It denotes that an action started in past is just been


completed.
• Eg : He has written a note for my school.
PRESENT PERFECT CONTINUOUS TENSE

• Formula Subject + Have/has + been + V1 + Ing + object.

• It is used to denote an action that had started in past and


still going on.
• Eg : I have been studying for 4 years.

PAST CONTINUOUS TENSE

• It is used to denote an action happening


particular time in the past.
• Example : I was eating an apple.
PAST PERFECT TENSE

• Formula Sub + Had+V3+Obj

• It is used to denote an action that was completed before


another action started in the past . It is used with the earlier of
two actions . Simple past tense is used with another action.
• Eg; I have completed my assignment , Before sir arrived in
the school
PAST PERFECT CONTINUOUS

• Formula Sub+Had+been+V1+ing+Obj

• It is used to denote an action that was fiished at


definite time in past but which had been going on
before it was finished.
• Eg ;I had been writing English notes When I heard
alarm.

FUTURE TENSE IS USED TO DENOTE FUTURE

SIMPLE FUTURE TENSE

• Formula Sub + shall/will + Obj

• It is used to denote an action which is going to


take place in future
Eg:I shall play today football.
FUTURE CONTINUOUS TENSE

• Formula Sub + will/shall +be+ V1+ing+Obj

• It is used to denote a particular action which is going


to take place in future.
• Eg:I shall be doing home work.
FUTURE PERFECT TENSE

• Formula Sub + will/shall+Have+V3+Sub

• It is used to denote completion of an action by a


certain period of time in the future.
• Eg;I will have received my prize tomorrow.
FUTURE PERFECT CONTINUOUS TENSE

• Formula Sub + will/shall +have+been+V1+ing+Obj

• It is used to denote an action which continue upto a


certain point of time in future.
• Eg:I will have been waiting here for Nine hours
