A utility software is a program that is used to perform

specific or routine tasks required for the operation of the

computer system.

Routine tasks are tasks that the computer must perform

repeatedly.
Examples of utility software

EXAMPLES of utility software

Antivirus software.
Back –up utilities
File compression utilities
Scan disk or disk formatters
Antivirus software / Virus checkers

 it is a system software used to check for viruses/ malware on the

computer.

When it detects the virus/ malware it will quarantine the affected file or

it will delete the affected file.

 Examples of antivirus software are:

Smadav, Avira, Avast, Windows Defender, Norton

Back up utilities

A back up is a copy of the file stored on another storagd

device.
If you have file in your computer you can make backup on
a pen drive or on a memory card.
Back up can be used when the computer is affected either
by a virus or when a computer crashes.

i. The user is unable to find an important document. He thinks it was
deleted in error some weeks ago. This must not happen again.

File compression utilities/ software

 file compression is the process of reducing the size of the

file so that it will be smaller.

If a file is smaller , it will occupy less space.

Examples of compressed files are MP3 and MP4.

MP3 is a compressed audio file.

MP4 is a compresed video file.

Scan disk / disk repair software

These are utility software that are used to check that there are no
damaged sections on a disk

If the sectors of the disk are damaged hey will be repaired by disc
formatters.

Scan disks are also used to check if there is a space for a new file to
be saved.
