What is Occupational Dance?

Occupational Dances are dances which mimics the activities of the


livelihood, defense, and local culture. The types differ depending on
the origin place such as but not limited to: near seas, rivers,
mountains, forests. For the Philippines, the most common type of
occupational dance are the transformation of the rice cycle into
dance.

Bilaan
The Bilaan dance consists of men choosing and clearing fields, to
women bringing food, men digging the ground with poles, women
sowing seeds, then finally harvesting to a leisurely rhythm of the
faglong and gong.

Bukidnon
Similar to Bilaan, this dance also consists of men and women
cultivating. The Bukidnon uses a digging pole called tudak whilst
being accompanied by instruments also used in Bilaan, along with
an open bamboo called kalatong.

Talandig
The Talandig dances similarly as Bilaan in their tudak.

Aeta of Zambales
The Aeta of Zambales dances out the planting of gabi in
mangbutot.

Matigsulag Panulo
A dance where a man dances whilst using a bolo hunting down
various animals, mainly frogs called lakulak. A woman then takes
the man's findings and stores them into a basket.

Aeta of Pampanga
Similarly to Panulo, the Aeta also dances whilst hunting, boy or
man, and dances out to much of his life.

Pinapanilan
A dance which reenacts bee-hunting, which ends up in a situation
where a man are attacked by bees

Kalasag
Kalasag is a dance where the Matigsulag, reenact a combat using
spears and shields with movement full of skips, hops, and vibratory
hand movement whilst using a spear. Alongside this, their arms are
outspread, with movement appearing birdlike.

A dance where a man dances whilst using a bolo hunting down
various animals, mainly frogs called lakulak. A woman then takes
the man's findings and stores them into a basket.
