AIM OF QATAR DEBATE

•The aim of Qatar Debate is to


"shape the global citizens of today
and the intellectual leaders of
tomorrow in Qatar and the region"
through the introduction of a
variety of English and Arabic
debate programs.
Characteristics of Debate:
Participants:
• More than one person is involved.
Views:
• Contrary views are presented.

Exchange of Ideas:
• There is an exchange of ideas between the
individuals, where they will attempt to
disprove the views of the opposing team.
CRITICAL THINKING

•Plan what to say.

•Anticipate other team’s response.


•Think of an argument to counter other
team’s arguments.
Types of Motions
• FACT: Something is or is not.

The motion calls for a factual interpretation. It


is the most basic and straightforward sort of
motion. [THBT]

• VALUE: Something is of inherent worth or


not. [PRINCIPLES] [TH supports/ TH regrets.]
. POLICY: Something should be done or should not
be done. [Problem Solving] [THW]
Proposition needs a model.

. Action – government, international,


individual.
. Who, What, How, Who pays for it?
. Build the model anticipating the opposition
arguments.
. Must show that the model addresses a
problem and reduces it.
POINT OF INFORMATION
A POI is a short interjection addressed to the Debater who is speaking by a member of the opposing team.

POI may not be longer than 15 seconds.


The speaker can take or declines to take a POI.

Taking a POI is a good idea for the following reasons:


A. It’s in the rules!
B. It demonstrates good time management.
C. It provides early counter-rebuttals.
D. Put pressure on the Speaker.
MANNER - PRESENTATION
• EYE CONTACT.
• VOICE - TONE/ VOLUME OF DELIVERY.
• SPEED - NOT TOO FAST OR TOO SLOW.
• BODY - GESTURES
• STANCE
• USE OF NOTES.
• AVOID BEING NERVOUS
MATTER - CONTENT

• THE MATERIALS THAT YOU ARE GOING TO DEBATE ON.

• ARGUMENTS – IS IT LOGICAL AND RELEVANT TO THE


MOTION.

• IDEAS – TO BE SUPPORTED WITH EVIDENCES.

• ANALYSIS
• EVIDENCES - EXAMPLES/ STATISTICS.
METHOD - HOW ORGANISED

• WELL ORGANISED SPEECH.


• CLARITY AND STRUCTURE.
• HAVE CLEAR SIGNPOSTING/ TEAM SPLIT.
• KEEPING THE TIME LIMIT.
• TEAM – UNITY AMONG MEMBERS/ LOGIC.
• INDIVIDUAL – SPEECH STRUCTURE,
ARGUMENTS AND EXAMPLES TO SUPPORT
THE CASE.
