Architecture Terms & Definitions DEFINITION OF ARCHITECTURE

Isthe Art and Science of

Designing and Constructing
Buildings.

Is consists of a dynamic and

inseparable fusion of Art and
technology.
1. Architecture Terms & Definitions
Architects and builders have
developed specialized terms to
describe their buildings.

This sub topic of the guide

provides definitions for some of
the more common technical
terms.

Circulation: Used to describe the flow of people

throughout a home or building.

The term 'circulation' refers to the movement of

people through, around and between buildings and
other parts of the built environment. Within
buildings, circulation spaces are spaces that are
predominately used for circulation, such as
entrances, foyers and lobbies, corridors, stairs,
landings and so on

The flow of the floorplan seems to be in a

grid structure. The main path is in red while
secondary paths are in orange
Façade: The exterior faces of a building,
often used to refer to the wall in which the
building entry is located.
Types of facades for buildings

The word facade originally comes from the Italian word “facciata”, and is
defined as the outside or all of the external faces of a building.

print, travel ways, parking, drainage

facilities, sanitary sewer lines, water
lines, trails, lighting, and
landscaping (showing the location
of the building).

Is an orthographic plan showing the

length and width of the property)
What is a Setback?
Setbacks limit how close you can build to the
property boundaries, roads, septic systems,
wetlands, and shorelines. Setback standards can
be obtained from your local zoning office.
Setbacks vary depending on what type of
structure is involved. For example, setback
requirements for a garage may differ from
setback requirements for a shed. Setbacks also
vary depending on the location of the property
(whether the property is located in an urban or
rural area). Some zoning districts do not require
setbacks
Cont.… Floor Plan
 Is the arrangement of different levels of a building showing the
location of stairs, rooms, interior walls, doors, windows and etc.
1.Architecture Terms & Definitions

 Is the shows an orthographic view of the width and length of the

building and includes such items as walls, door, and windows.

 Graphically codes (using cross hatching to identifying the

constriction material to be used.)

 The most important architectural drawing is the floor plan. It

contains more information than all the other working drawings.

 Basically, the floor plan is a horizontal sectional view of the

building taken about 150cm above the floor line. This is done of
course to cut thought the majority of openings in the walls and
to provide a view of the equipment installed inside.

Elevation

height and width of the building and includes

such exterior items as walls, door, windows,
and roof slops.
An elevation views is rather easy to visualize
since it is the view seen while looking at the
project from the outside.
Elevations are introduced to represent items the
way they would look after assembly; for e.g.
window frames are drawn with double lines,
and siding drawn to show the lap spacing.

Section
Is a section view shows a vertical cut through a
building.
1. Architecture Terms & Definitions

Isthe orthographic view drawing indicates

constriction details that could only cut a part of
the floor, walls, and roof of the project.

Different scales in section drawing

Small scale = To show entire of building

Large scale = To draw in order to enlarge

individual walls and show greater detail.
