ORIGIN
• Pascal's Triangle is a pattern of
numbers named after the French
mathematician Blaise Pascal. It
was originally described in
ancient China as the "Yanghui
Triangle" and in Persia as the
"Khayyam Triangle." Pascal's
work on the triangle's properties
and applications in 17th-century
France made it well-known.
WHAT IS IT?
• Pascal's triangle is the triangular
array of numbers that begins with 1
on the top and with 1's running
down the two sides of a triangle.
Each new number lies between two
numbers and below them, and its
value is the sum of the two
numbers above it. It also gives the
coefficients in the expansion of any
binomial expression.
PROPERTIES OF
PASCAL'S TRIANGLE
• Each number is the sum of the two numbers above it.
• The outside numbers are all 1.
• The triangle is symmetric.
• The second diagonal shows the counting numbers.
• The third diagonal shows the triangular numbers.
• The fourth diagonal shows the tetrahedral numbers
• The sums of the rows give the powers of 2.
• Each row gives the digits of the powers of 11.
• Each row also gives the “binomial coefficients (a+b)ⁿ."
• The Fibonacci numbers are there along diagonals.
APPLICATIONS
IN SUBJECTS Algebra- Pascal's Triangle is useful in expanding binomial expressions
quickly. It provides coefficients for the terms in the expansion of (a + b)^n.
It helps in simplifying algebraic expressions, finding patterns in
polynomial coefficients, and solving equations.
Art and Design- Its geometric patterns can serve as inspiration for creating
visually appealing artwork and designs. It involves tessellations,
symmetry, and repetitive patterns found and can therefore help people
apply them to their artistic creations.
