A patient with AIDS presented with a pleural empyema caused by polymicrobial anaerobic bacteria as seen on a chest x-ray. CT scans of the chest were used to guide a needle biopsy of a pulmonary abscess and showed a fistula tract from the chest wall to the pleural cavity. A follow up CT scan after surgery revealed resolution of the abscess following sternal resection.

Representative CT scan of chest showing opening of fistula on chest wall and tract to pleural cavity CT of upper chest was used to guide needle biopsy of pulmonary abscess A postoperative chest CT scan 1 week following the CT scan shown in Figure 1 reveals sternal resection and resolution of the abscess Empyema. Chest Radiograph and Computed Tomography (CT) Scan Demonstrating a Loculated Empyema Secondary to Pneumococcal Pneumonia With Septic Shock Posterior-anterior chest radiograph demonstrating extensive cavitary lung disease Chest x-ray showed right upper-lobe infiltrate with central cavitation
