Comparing and Contrasting Pictures

1. Compare: to find similarities


a. Example: Apples and oranges are similar because they are both types of fruit.

2. Contrast: to find differences


a. Example: an apple has a thin skin that we can eat, but an orange has a thick skin
that we cannot eat.
Steps on How to Compare and contrast Photos

Examine each photo.


Describe each photo.
What are the similarities? Compare.
What are the differences? Contrast.
Summarize your ideas.
Examine each photo.
Look at the Entire Picture
- Side to side,
- Sides to middle
- Top to bottom
- Look at all of the details

Ask Yourself:
- What is happening in the photo?
- What catches my attention?
- What people and objects are
shown?
- What are some details that are
the same or different?
Describe each photo.
Phrases that are useful:

- On the right side of…
- In front of the…
- In the top left corner…
- Behind the…
- In the middle…

live in. They both have people walking around going from
place to place. The pictures are similar because people are
shopping.

In Picture B, I can see there are less people than in


Picture A. There are trees in this picture and there are no
trees in Picture A. The buildings are not as tall as Picture
A. This looks like a slower pace city.
