REPTILES
INTRODUCTION TO REPTILES
Reptiles are cold-blooded vertebrates covered in scales.
They descended from tetra pods, the ancestors of all four-
footed animals, and first appeared over 300 million years
ago.
Reptiles come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes, from
tiny geckos to massive crocodiles.
Reptile is a member of class Reptilia. It is a group of air-
breathing vertebrates that has internal fertilization and
epidermal scale covering part of their body.
They are found on all continents except Antarctica and
play important roles in their ecosystems
DIVERSITY OF REPTILES
There are four main groups of reptiles: turtles, lizards, snakes,
and crocodilians
Turtles have shells that protect their bodies
Lizards have a wide range of body shapes and sizes, including
legless forms like snakes
Snakes are all legless, but they have evolved many adaptations
to compensate, such as powerful muscles and specialized jaws
Crocodilians include crocodiles, alligators, gavials, and
caimans, all of which are large predators with thick hides and
powerful jaws
ADAPTATIONS OF REPTILES
Reptiles have many adaptations that help them
survive in a variety of environments.
Their scales protect them from predators,
dehydration, and harsh weather.
Cold-bloodedness allows them to conserve
energy in cold environments.
Many reptiles have specialized senses, such as
keen eyesight and smell, that help them hunt for
food.
Some reptiles, like chameleons, can change color
to camouflage themselves.

adaptations, such as a turtle shell, a lizard's

THREATS TO REPTILES
.
Reptiles face many threats today, including habitat loss, climate change, and
invasive species.
Humans are also a major threat, through hunting, pollution, and the wildlife trade.
It is important to protect reptiles and their habitats so that they can continue to
thrive.
