Early Life
Born on January 8, 1909 into a traditional Baidya family in
North Calcutta, Ashapurna faced the constraints of a conservative
upbringing. Female education was restricted, yet her childhood
was marked by a unique self-education journey, listening to her
brothers' readings and developing a love for literature.
Self-Education
Despite the lack of formal education, Ashapurna's self-
education thrived under the influence of her artist father,
Harendra Nath Gupta, and book-loving mother, Sarola
Sundari. A move to a new house provided her and her
sisters the freedom to read, fostering a lifelong love for
literature. Her curiosity and love for learning blossomed
through self-reading and storytelling. Early exposure to the
works of Rabindranath Tagore and other literary giants
ignited her passion for writing.
