TYPE THEORY

The Type Theory represents an attempt to

scientifically describe personality by
classifying individuals into convenient
categories. There are 2 categories of type
theories:
1. Sheldon’s Physiognomy Theory:
Sheldon’s Theory is a unique body – type -
temperamental model. He identifies 3 body types:

(i) Endomorphs: bulky and beloved, fat in

proportion to height, personality temperament
is viscertonic (seeks comfort, fine food etc.)
(ii) Mesomorph : strong & athletic, somatotonic ( fond of
muscular activity, highly aggressive, self- assertive).

(iii) Ectomorph : thin, long, poorly developed physically,

intelligent, cerebrotonic ( excessive inhibiton, restraint, shy).

2. Carl Jung’s Extrovert- Introvert Theory:

Carl Jung proposed his own two-part theory of personality. These
2 types are:
(i) Extrovert: They are optimistic, outgoing, gregarious and
sociable. They are much of a doer than a thinker.
(ii) Introvert: They are more inward-directed people, less
sociable etc. They will be guided by their own ideas and
philosophy.
Jung at the base of his theory, explains that the
personality has 4 dimensions :
-- Thinking -- Feeling
-- Sensation -- Intuition
