Classification of Beta Blockers into 3 Generations
• Non-selective, meaning that they
First Generation blocked both beta-1 (β1) and beta-2 (β2)
Andrenoceptors.

• Beta-blockers are more

Second Generation cardioselective in that they are
relatively selective for β1 adrenoceptors.

• Vasolidating beta blockers

• have hemodynamic effects including
Third Generation decreased pressure wave reflection from
periphery,leading to decreases in
central aortic blood pressure.

β1 : located mainly in the heart and in the kidneys

β2 : located mainly in the lungs, gastrointestinal
