Inter Disciplinary Project

This document contains information about an interdisciplinary project on forest society and colonialism. It lists the names of the group members and acknowledges their teacher for granting the opportunity to do the project. The references used include Google Chrome and NCERT textbooks. The project explores how colonialism impacted forest societies in India through the colonial forest policy and exploitation of forest resources. It discusses how forests were cut down at a large scale under colonial rule for shipbuilding, railways, and plantations, displacing local communities. The Indian Forest Act of 1927 consolidated previous forest acts implemented under British rule.

How colonialism has affected forest
society in India?
Forests were felled at an alarming rate in India with the arrival
of the colonial rulers. The colonial government cut forest for
making ships and railway sleepers. They also displaced forest
communities which protected their forest as sacred grooves.
The government also gave contracts to cut trees to earn profits.
Large forests were also cut down to set up plantation.
The first Forest Act in India was passed in 1865. It would be
successively amended in the coming years. The Indian Forest
Act of 1927 would become the most consolidated of all the
Forest Acts. The Indian Forest Act, 1927 was largely based on
previous Indian Forest Acts implemented under the British.
