How Psychiatry is different from medicine ?

• History and Mental State Examination is different and


almost diagnostic.

Why Psychiatry is important ?
• Medical specialities have made advances in various
areas within their domain, humanism has often got
neglected and forgotten.
(HOLISTIC APPROACH IS MISSING)

• 14% of the global burden of disease has been attributed


to neuropsychiatric disorders

• Mental disorders, a highly prevalent group of non-


communicable diseases, affect the lives of 1 out of 5
persons each year.
Why Psychiatry is important ?

• Knowledge of Psychiatry equips the students to deal with


various difficult and complex situations during medical
practice (multidisciplinary services)

• Psychiatric Problems are common among General


Practice - 25 %

• Suicide is the leading cause of death.


• According to World Health Organization (WHO), 700,000
people die by suicide annually and it is the second leading
• cause of death among 15–29 year old.

• This means globally 16,000,000 individuals per annum


make an attempt to kill themselves.
COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES
• 1.1Discuss the etiology, epidemiology and pathological and

pharmacological basis of psychiatric disorders


• 1.2 Describe the clinical features, diagnostic criteria,
management and prognosis of psychiatric disorders
• 2.1 Interpret the findings of history and mental state
examination to develop a differential diagnosis
• 2.2 Make an appropriate selection of relevant
investigations required in diagnosing mental disorders
COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES
• 2.3 Formulate the appropriate management plan (pharmacological and
nonpharmacological) of the most common mental health disorders

• 2.4 Obtain history and perform physical examination of the patient with
signs and symptoms of mental illnesses

• 2.5 Perform mental state examination independently

• 3.1 Demonstrate professional and ethical attitude in Psychiatry settings


as described in Majmaah curriculum

• 3.2 Communicate effectively with colleague’s in team-based activities,


patients and their relatives in psychiatric settings

Examination
• Mid module (week 4)

• Only written exam

• Final written exam(week 8)

OSCE

• Overall marks for the module will be calculated out of 100


(continuous + final assessment marks). Pass marks >60 %.

95% attendance is mandatory to appear in the exam
