INTRODUCTION
BACKGROUND OF BEST LAND AND SEA SERVICE LIMITED

Best Land and Sea Service Limited (BLS LTD) is Nigeria’s foremost
indigenous drilling and completion fluids, chemicals and engineering
service company. Incorporated in 1987 with over 30 years experience
in Nigeria oil and gas industry.
INTRODUCTION
DUTIES OF BEST LAND AND SEA SERVICE LIMITED
BLS drilling fluids is a division of BEST LAND AND SEA SERVICES
LIMITED. We are into:
 Provision of drilling fluids, chemicals and engineering services
 Provision of completion fluids, chemicals and engineering services
 Provision of work over fluids, chemicals and engineering services
 Sales of chemicals
 Mud Plant Provision; the company has its liquid mud plant located at onne rivers state. The
plant processes drilling fluids and chemicals utilized for fields operations.
SPECIFIC WORK DONE
In Best Land and Sea Service Limited, all interns are assigned to the
Mud Engineering Laboratory which consist three (3) major sections:
 Laboratory Equipments
 Laboratory Apparatus
 Chemicals

AIMS/OBJECTIVES AS AN INTERN
As an intern some of the goals I aimed to achieve during my six months experience are
listed below:
• To be able to build oil and water based drilling mud
• To be able to run basic test on a oil or water based mud
• To be able to run test on some chemicals
DRILLING FLUID
A Drilling fluid also known as drilling mud, refers to a heavy viscous fluid
mixture that is used in oil and gas drilling operations to carry rock cuttings to
the surface.
CLASSIFICATION OF DRILLING FLUIDS
Drilling fluid can be classified into 3 major component:
• Oil-based fluids
• Water-based fluids
• Pneumatic fluids
 Oil-based fluids; It’s also known as Oil Based Mud(OBM). Its primarily
used to drill troublesome shales and to improve hole stability. They are used for
special applications such as high pressure/high temperature wells.
 Water-based fluids: It’s also known as Water Based Mud(WBM). They are
the most extensively used drilling fluids. They are generally easy to build,
inexpensive to maintain and can be formulated to overcome most drilling
problems.

LABORATORY EQUIPMENTS
During the course of the SIWES program we did a tour in the laboratory. The
laboratory consist of different equipments and apparatus which serves their
different functions in the application of drilling fluids. Some of these materials
and equipment used to produce and determine the properties of drilling fluid are
listed below:

1. Electrical Weighing Balance: It is used in the accurate measurement of the

weight of drilling fluid component. It provides precision and accuracy in measuring
various additives that contributes to the formulation of drilling fluids.
LABORATORY EQUIPMENTS

2. Mixer/Mud Agitators: This equipment is used to prevent settling of solids,

control temperature and maintain uniformity in the mud. Agitators use rotating
blades to keep the mud in motion, preventing the separation of components.
LABORATORY EQUIPMENTS

3. Viscometer/Rheometer: A viscometer is a mechanical device used to measure

viscosity at varying shear rates. Viscosity and gel strength measurements relate to
the flow properties of fluid. From the viscometer readings rheological parameters
may be determined.
LABORATORY EQUIPMENTS

4. Mud balance: It is used for checking the density of any drilling fluid. It is
expressed either in pounds per gallon (lb/gal) or pounds per cubic foot (lb/ft3) or in
kilograms per cubic meter (kg/m3) or compared to the weight of an equal volume of
water, as specific gravity (SG).The mud balance measures the mud density (MW,
lb/gal) to an accuracy of ±0.1 lb/gal. The mud balance consists of a supporting base, a
cup, a lid, and a graduated beam carrying a sliding weight. A knife edge on the arm
rests on the supporting base. Scales on the top of the mud balance indicate
measurement ranging from 6.5 to 23lbs/gal.
LABORATORY EQUIPMENTS

5. Retort kit: A mud retort is used to measure the volume percent of the liquid
phase (oil and water) and solids in the drilling mud. This is done by heating a
known volume of whole mud in a retort.
LABORATORY EQUIPMENTS

6. API filter press: It is used to analyze filtration behavior and wall cake
building characteristics of drilling fluid. Their stability is based on fluid loss and
may be determined by measuring and describing the filter cake. API filtrate is
the filtrate volume in terms of (ml) after 30minutes in API fluid loss test.
LABORATORY EQUIPMENTS

7. ES (Electrical Stability) meter: It is a piece of equipment that is accurate,

compact and portable and is intended for routine field and laboratory use to
measure the relative electrical strength of drilling fluids having a continuous oil
phase. It indicates the emulsion and oil-wetting qualities of the sample.
LABORATORY APPARATUS
Apparatus played a vital role in the accuracy and reliability of scientific data, ensuring
that our mud experiments could be replicated and verified by other engineers. Some
of the lab apparatus used are: Beaker, Graduated Cylinder, Pipette, Conical Flask,
Le’Chatelier
. Flask, Syringe, Filter Paper, Pipette Filler, Hydrometer.
SOME CHEMICALS USED IN THE
PREPARATION OF DRILLING FLUID
 Some basic chemicals used in the preparation of WBM include: soda ash, caustic
soda, bentonite, KCl, Pac-L, Pac-R, xanthan gum, glycol, calcium carbonate, barite,
soltex.
 Some basic chemicals used in the preparation of OBM include: lime, primary and
secondary emulsifiers, clay, calcium chloride, water, Soltex, Gilsonite, Rheology
Modifier (RM), Wetting Agent (WA), calcium carbonate, barite.
 Some chemicals used in running chemical analysis for a built drilling fluid includes:
sulphuric acid, xylene, phenolphthalein indicator, silver nitrate, potassium dichromate
indicator, methyl orange indicator.

SAFETY PRACTICES IN THE LABORATORY
I was made aware that my actions in the laboratory could be
responsible for my safety and that of others and as such safety begins
with the individual. Safety practices in the laboratory were based on
the following rules:
• Do not work without the appropriate Personal Protective Equipment
(PPE).
• Always follow the standard testing procedures.
• Incase of any spill on the floor, clean immediately.
• Unplug and clean testing equipment after each use.
• Always switch off all electrical appliances at the close of work.
CONCLUSION
Working in the laboratory in Best Land Sea Service Limited(BLS)
has provided me with practical exposure and enriched my
comprehension of theoretical concepts. It has also equipped me with
proficiency in utilizing various Industrial laboratory tools and
equipment. This experience not only enhanced my skills but also
reinforced my resolve to pursue a career in mud engineering. I truly
appreciate SIWES, Best Land and Sea Service Limited(BLS), and the
Federal University of Petroleum Resources Effurun (FUPRE) for
granting me this invaluable opportunity.
