Crop Advisory - Corn

Corn Crop Advisory for Demo Management.

1 Land Preparation “0” Days

• Land preparation - 2 ploughing & Harrowing at 15 cm depth.

• Apply 5 MT or 10 to 15 cartloads of compost manure before final harrowing.
• Seed & Seed Rate: - Syngenta Hybrid seed & 8 kg per acre.
• To protect plants from early insect pest, plant Syngenta Plus brand seed or treat the seeds with Fortenza Duo @ 6
ml/kg.
• Seed Sowing:- In Rows by hand dibbling or seed drill
• Spacing: - 60 X 22 cm or 55 cm X 24 cm ( Standard Spacing)
• Basal Fertilizer Application: - 35 kg Urea + 50 kg DAP + 20 Kg MOP + 10 kg Zinc
• Weed Control: - To keep weed free crop till 30-40 days, Apply 1kg Atrazine + 0.5 litre Lasso (a pre-emergent herbicide
Optimum Spacing
in just after 24for Corn
to 48 cultivation:
hours after sowing). Ensure proper moisture while herbicide application.

2 Seedling Stage

• At this stage seedlings are damaged due to early insects like Shoot fly, Stem borer, Cutworm & Fall Armyworm
which damages 15 to 30% plants.
• Stem borer control - apply insecticide Alika @ 80 ml/acre at 20 to 25 days
• FAW :- Use specialty chemicals for Fall Armyworm.
• Weed control :- At this stage spray Calaris Xtra @ 1400 ml/Acre at 3-4 leaf stage of weeds as post emergent
herbicide.

3 Knee High Stage

• Knee high stage is one of critical stage for Water/Fertilizer management.

• Insufficient moisture may lead to poor tassel and ear formation, yield loss up to 15%.
• Ensure proper moisture through irrigation at this stage, followed by Fertilizer application @ 50 kg urea/acre.
• In high rain and humid area, plant may show leafy disease symptoms of NLB (Northern Leaf blight). To
protect spray Amistar Top or Ampact Xtra @ 200 ml/acre at this stage around 40 to 45 DAS.

Northern corn leaf blight (NCLB) Maydis Leaf blight

4 Flowering and Grain filling stage

• Optimum moisture is required at flowering stage for better pollination.

• Ensure optimum moisture at this stage through irrigation or rain water for better grain filling.
• Apply 40 kg urea + 20 kg MOP at flowering stage (55 to 65 days)

5 Maturity / Harvesting Stage

• Crop should be harvested when grain moisture reached to 20% or less or black layer formation at the
bottom /nose of grains.
• Harvesting at right stage helps in getting higher yield. Yield realization is 10-15 % higher at right stage
compare to harvest at higher moisture.

Disclaimer – 1. Above Mentioned chemicals are recommended based on internal trials, the percentage of control
may vary based on micro-climate, level of infestation and adoption of uniform management practices by maize
growing farmers in the area.
2. Recommended by Indian Institute of Maize Research (ICAR) for FAW.
Important to remember:
 Foliar applications need to be taken up based on the damage symptoms; Davis scale 2-3 the
right time.
 Regular scouting for damage symptoms is recommended.
 Proper coverage including the whorl is very critical for effective FAW management.
 After these recommended applications, the farmer can apply cheaper insecticides like
Polytrin C, Curacron etc. for cleanup and to maintain below ETL population.

DAVIS SCALE : For FAW damage assessment.
