Multicultural Factors
RESPECTFUL Model
RESPECTFUL Model
The RESPECTFUL Model was developed in order
to have one goal and that is to recognize the
multidimensionality of all clients with regards to
counseling and its process.
RESPECTFUL Model
Religious – Some clients are affected by their
religion. Others might not be affected at all.
Economic – Class standing and roles in life affects
the progress and development of a client.
Sexual – Sexual identity also influences personal
development especially those whose orientation is
oppressed thus greatly affecting their sense of worth.
RESPECTFUL Model
Psychological – Clients behave based on their
maturity specially in dealing with life’s challenges.
Ethnic – Some clients experience “within-group”
differences which affects their psychological
development.
Chronological – Physical, cognition, and
psychological skills affect how an individual perceive
life at different stages.
RESPECTFUL Model
Trauma – Stressful situations can put an individual
at risk for psychological dangers.
Family – Family plays vital role in developing one’s
career and ambition in life.
Unique– People who possess unique physical
characteristics may experience stress of
dissatisfaction.
RESPECTFUL Model
Location – being aware of the location, types of
occupation available to an individual and even the
dialects spoken helps a counselor be fair at all times.
RESPECTFUL Model
Consideration of the above during the course
of a counseling relationship helps the
counselor-client relationship stay, as the
acronym insinuates, respectful.
RESPECTFUL Model
This model provides counselors with the
ability to progress appropriately, ethically,
and holistically through each counseling
session.
