Definition:
is a form of government in which the rulers
exercise authority without the consent of the
governed
a way of governing that values order and control
over personal freedom.
A government run by authoritarianism is usually
headed by a dictator.
Characterized by a high concentration of power in
the hand of a single authority or a small groups of
individuals
To retain power and keep control over people,
authoritarian governments frequently use widespread
censorship, control over the media and
communication channels, and monitoring.
These political structures can be one-party
governments, absolute monarchy, or dictatorships.

Single-Party States: A single political party
controls political power in a single-party state.
Elections, when held, are generally not free and
fair, and opposition parties are either illegal or
subject to strict rules.

Absolute Monarchies: systems of governance
known are those in which a single monarch, typically
a king or queen, has absolute power and is unaffected
by the constitution or legal system. The authority of
the monarch can be inherited and transferred within a
royal dynasty.

EXAMPLES OF AUTHORITARIAN
• North Korea- Under the Kim dynasty is often cited as one as
one of theGOVERNMENT
most repressive authoritarian regime in the world.
• China- China’s one party system, controlled by the Chinese
Communist Party tightly restricts political opposition and has
limited civil liberties.
• Russia- Under Vladimir Putin, Russia has become
increasingly authoritarian, with restrictions and political
opposition and suppression of independent media
• Saudi Arbia- an absolute monarchy with limited Political
Pluralism and restrictions on freedom of speech
