Course description
• Mythology and Folklore

This one-semester course presents a study of the


literary genres of the mythology and folklore of
other countries reflecting various traditions, beliefs,
values, and customs.
• What is mythology?
• Mythology comes the Greek word “mythos” for story-of-the people an
and “logos” for word or spoken or the spoken story of people.
• A story about gods, other supernatural beings, or heroes of a
long past time.
• What about folklore?
• Folklore is collection of fictional tales about people and animals.
Why do we need to study mythology & folklore?
1. provide insight into the beliefs, values and cultural
practices of ancient societies
2. mythology and folklore have had a significant impact on
art, literature, and popular culture. Thus, studying these
stories can deepen our appreciation and understanding
of various forms of art and entertainment.
3. mythology and folklore can provide insight into
universal human experiences and emotions.
