This section focuses on how people
preserve extensions of themselves
through the preservation of particular
lifestyles and material possessions to
what society considers to be necessities
and wants.

Presentation title 3
The possession of material things also
indicates one’s status in the society.
These personal choices build one’s
material and economic self which is an
extension of his/her social identity.

The material self, according to William
James, pertains to the objects, places, or
even people which have the label
"mine". The economic self, means
capacity of individuals and families to
regularly meet their needs.

by one's material things.

• The things that people own reflect a lot about


them. Thus, a person's sense of self and identity
affects how they decide to buy the things they
want and how they decide to use their money to
meet their personal and social necessities.
DECISION

• Financial limitations, the accessibility of goods


and services, and the influence of family and
friends are just a few of the variables that
impact decisions about what to buy and what
services to use.
However, the most important factor is determining
whether these items and services fall under:
WANTS
Similar to luxury goods. They are
purchased for non-necessary reasons by
people.
NEEDS
They are essential for surviving. People
must buy food, clothing, and shelter
since they are necessities.
In the process of acquiring material goods, people
generally consider 2 things:
