Sample Outline (Revisited)
Topic: Pregnancy
Narrowed Topic: Three possible effects of teenage pregnancy
Audience: General Public, Parents and Teenagers
Purpose: To inform the audience about three possible effects of teenage pregnancy.
Thesis statement: Teenage pregnancy may result in health issues, an inability to
complete school and depression.
1. Teenage pregnancy may result in health issues in both mother and child.

A. Jamaican teen mothers risk getting HIV as girls in the 15-19 age group are thrice more likely to

be infected with HIV than their male counterparts (“Country Brief”, 2017).

B. According to Joseph (2020), teenage pregnancy causes teen moms to develop health issues

such as Anaemia, depression, excess or poor weight gain and high blood pressure.

C. The physiques of teen mothers are generally not completely developed.

II. In addition to health issues, teenage pregnancy may affect the young girl’s ability to complete

school.

A. Jamaica’s education regulations state that a girl who becomes pregnant shall be excluded from

continuing the public educational system until after giving birth (Kennedy, 2017).

B. Most teens do not attempt to complete school after pregnancy because they now have to take

care of a child (Humberstone, 2018).

C. A study has found that between 67 and 89 percent of teen mothers abandon school

(“Educational Failure”, 2011).

III. Teenage pregnancy may result in depression.

A. “The stress process theory suggests that teen mothers are more likely to be depressed because

they experience more stressors, including financial strain, work–family conflict, and barriers to

pursuing education” (Whitworth, 2017, p. 391).

B. Depression in adolescent pregnancies is common but under recognized, solid evidence also

suggests that depression in pregnancy can have a negative impact on both newborn and

mother. (Koleva & Stuart, 2013).

C. In Jamaica, steps are being taken to reduce depression as a result of teenage pregnancy as

well as other mental health problems related to the issue (“No more”, 2020). .
