UTILITIES QUESTIONS
44. Cooling Tower
Heat Removal Device placed at rooftop
Cooling tower technology - The tower creates a stream of
cold water that runs through a heat exchanger, cooling the
hot condenser coils. The tower blows air through a stream of
water causing some of it to evaporate, and the evaporation
cools the water stream. One of the disadvantages of this type
of system is that water has to be added regularly to make up
for liquid lost through evaporation. The actual amount of
cooling that an air conditioning system gets from a cooling
tower depends on the relative humidity of the air and the
barometric pressure.

50. What are Cassette air conditioners?
Cassette units work the same way as wall-hung split
system units, with the difference being that cassettes
are installed into the ceiling instead of on the wall.
The indoor unit itself sits flush to your ceiling and
distributes conditioned air through two, three or four
sides of the unit. The outdoor unit of a cassette air
conditioner is mounted outside, in much the same
way as it would be for a conventional wall mounted
split system unit.

UTILITIES QUESTIONS
54. Cooling Tower
Cooling towers are heat removal devices used to
transfer process waste heat to the atmosphere.
Cooling towers may either use the evaporation of
water to remove process heat and cool the working
fluid to near the wet-bulb air temperature or, in the
case of closed circuit dry cooling towers, rely solely on
air to cool the working fluid to near the dry-bulb air
temperature.
UTILITIES QUESTIONS

draft counterflow tower with fill; the direction of air coming inside the heat
exchanger (indicated by green arrows) and the hot air exiting the cooling
tower (indicated by red arrows).

FREON
A chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) is an organic compound that
contains only carbon, chlorine, hydrogen and fluorine,
produced as a volatile derivative
of methane and ethane. They are also commonly
known by the DuPont brand name FREON. The most
common representative is dichlorodifluoromethane (R-
12 or Freon-12). Many CFCs have been widely used
as refrigerants, propellants (in aerosol applications),
and solvents. The manufacture of such compounds has
been phased out (and replaced with products such
as R-410A) by the Montreal Protocol because they
contribute to ozone depletion in the
upperatmosphere.
UTILITIES QUESTIONS
56. What is the Temperature

Refrigeration and Air Conditioning
a. The effective temperature and relative humidity of
the air to be used for comfortable cooling
shall be maintained at 20°Celsius to 24°Celsius and
50% to 60%, respectively, with 4.60 to
7.60 meters per minute air movement within the living
zone.
UTILITIES QUESTIONS
56. What is the Temperature
Range for Comfortable Cooling?
The Green Garage design target comfort zone is:
Maximum: 78 F (summer) 25.5 C
Minimum: 68 F (winter) 20 C
Relative Humidity (RH): 30% - 60% RH
Ideal condition is temperatures between 68-78 F and 45%

UTILITIES QUESTIONS
61. What is an Air Handling Unit?
Also known as AHU, it is a device used to condition
and circulate air as part of a heating, ventilating, and
air-conditioning (HVAC) system. An air handler is
usually a large metal box containing a blower, heating
or cooling elements, filter racks or chambers, sound
attenuators, and dampers. Air handlers usually
connect to a ductwork ventilation system that
distributes the conditioned air through the building
and returns it to the AHU. Sometimes AHUs discharge
(supply) and admit (return) air directly to and from
the space served without ductwork.

UTILITIES QUESTIONS
92. What is Energy Efficiency Ratio (EER)?
It is the ratio of the cooling capacity of an air
conditioner in British Thermal Units (BTU) per hour, to
the total electrical input (in watts) under certain
specified tests. Air conditioner EER ratings higher than
10 are considered most cost effective. The higher the
ratio, the less the unit will cost to operate. Air
conditioners that have been tested have Energy
Efficiency Ratios and are certified by the Association
of Appliance Manufacturers (AHAM). These units will
generally list their EER ratios in their product features

NOTE: Reflective Glass is NOT reflective in the sense
that it acts as a mirror, although some products DO
indeed have a highly reflective surface, but rather in
the sense that it reflects RADIATION rather than
absorbing it. Its disadvantage against ordinary glass is
its high initial COST. However, this will be offset by
savings in electricity in the long run.

102. A device that controls the Elevator
Doors
ELEVATOR CONTROL PANEL
A door device for an elevator is provided with an elevator door for
opening/closing a doorway through which an interior of a car
communicates with a landing, a distance sensor for continuously
detecting a distance from the doorway to a passenger at the
landing, a processing device for obtaining a door control
command corresponding to information from the distance
sensor, and a door control device for controlling a movement of
the elevator door based on the door control command from the
processing device. Thus, the elevator door can be moved in
accordance with the movement of the passenger. Accordingly,
the passenger is allowed to board the car more reliably, and a
running efficiency of the elevator can be enhanced.

105. What is the use of a Ground Wire?
UTILITIES QUESTIONS
105. What is the use of a Ground Wire?
A ground wire provides the least resistance
to earth ground or chassis ground to prevent
electrocution. Sweat human body can reach as
low as 300 ohms of resistance; touching a live
source makes you the completed circuit to
ground, and electricity passing through the
heart may kill you. A ground wire provides a
much lesser path to ground so that electricity
will take the easiest path or resistance without
going through you.

UTILITIES QUESTIONS
107. What is a Service Drop?
In electric power distribution, a service drop is an
overhead electrical line running from a utility pole, to a
customer's building or other premises. It is the point
where electric utilities provide power to their
customers. The customer connection to an
underground distribution system is usually called a
"service lateral". Conductors of a service drop or
lateral are owned and maintained by the utility
company.

UTILITIES QUESTIONS
114. What is a Cable Tray?
In the electrical wiring of buildings, a cable
tray system is used to support insulated
electric cables used for power distribution and
communication. Cable trays are used as an
alternative to open wiring or electrical
conduit systems, and are commonly used for cable
management in commercial and industrial
construction. They are especially useful in
situations where changes to a wiring system are
anticipated, since new cables can be installed by
laying them in the tray, instead of pulling them
through a pipe.

1. Actuator lever - used to manually trip and
reset the circuit breaker. Also indicates the
status of the circuit breaker (On or Off/tripped).
Most breakers are designed so they can still trip
even if the lever is held or locked in the "on"
position. This is sometimes referred to as "free
trip" or "positive trip" operation.
2. Actuator mechanism - forces the contacts
together or apart.
3. Contacts - Allow current when touching and
break the current when moved apart.
4. Terminals
5. Bimetallic strip.
6. Calibration screw - allows the manufacturer to
precisely adjust the trip current of the device
after assembly.

pounds in most residential plumbing systems. If the pressure
rises too high particularly above 80 psi, plumbing fixtures and

UTILITIES QUESTIONS
177. It is a Test Conducted to check if there
are leaks in the pipes.
A hydrostatic test is a way in
which pressure vessels such
as pipelines, plumbing, gas
cylinders, boilers and fuel tanks can be
tested for strength and leaks. The test
involves filling the vessel or pipe system
with a liquid, asually water, which may be
dyed to show up leaks, and pressurising to
the specified test pressure. Pressure
tightmess can be tested by shutting off the
supply valve and observing whether there is
a pressure loss. The locarion of a leak can be
identified more easily if the water contains
a colourant.
