Definition

 Deep vein thrombosis, or deep venous thrombosis


(DVT), is the formation of a blood clot (thrombus)
within a deep vein, most commonly the legs
Pre disposing factors

 Trauma
 Decrease blood flow during and after operation
 Tumor
 Congenital abnormality of clotting system
 Immobility
 Pregnancy
Clinical Features

Symptoms
 Sudden pain and swelling in calf or whole leg
 Pleuritic pain
 Breathlessness
 Hemoptysis
Signs
 Swelling is seen in leg.
 Congested or blue leg.
 Hard muscles.
 Homan sign(pain is produced when leg is stretched.
 Dilated superficial veins.
 Hot limb.
Diagnostic investigation

 Duplex ultrasound
 Ascending Venography
 Helical CT scan
Treatment

 anticoagulants
 thrombolysis
 venous thrombectomy
