ARTICLES

- Use a/an and the for singular contable nouns.


- Use the or no article with plural or uncontable nouns.

When to use articles

*If the topic is new or old

Example:
- I read a great book last week. = (we had´t discussed this book before. )
- What was the book about? = ( the one mentioned earlier)
* If something is the only one
Example:
- Where are the car keys? = ( the only car keys we have )

* If we are talking about the things in general or in particular


Example:
- Cats are clever animals. = ( The animal in general)
- The cats are in the garden. = ( our pets)

Other uses of a / an
Use a/an to describe something or say what job someone has got.
Example:
That´s a beautiful photo photo. He´s a doctor
Other uses of the

*We use the before a noun that has a defining relative clause:
Example:
I´ve just met the man who lives next door. = (One specific man)

*Use the before superlatives


Example:
Riobamba is the most beautiful city in Ecuador.

*We use the with certain countries, oceans, rivers, or groups of Island
Example:
I went to the USA/ The pacific/ The Amazon/The Bahamas
We use the with some fixed expressions about:
Example: Time: All the time_ Most of the time_ At the same time

Places or seasons:
Example: In the countryside_city_ In the summer

Free time activites


Example: Go to the cinema_ The gym_ Listen to the radio

USES OF NO ARTICLE
*We use no articles in phrases about meals
Example: I had breakfast_ Lunch_dinner at 7am/pm NOT I had a breakfast

*We use no article in some fixed phrases about places:


Example: I usually go home_ go to bed_ go to work_ go to school = at …. 7 pm

*We use no article to talk about most countries, continente. Cities. Streets etc
Example:
I went to Chine_ Africa_ Paris_ Bond Street etc.
