LEARNING MODULE 8
UNIT 8
NETTWORK CABLING
2

OVERVIEW of the MODULE:

In this module we are going to discuss about cables and types

of cables used in long distance transmission of information.
3

LEARNING OUTCOMES:

After the completing this module you are expected to:

 Describe a cable
 Identify types of cables
 State the characteristic of types of cables.
 Know why cables are used in place of wireless
 Learn that cables exist beneath the vast oceans
around the world.
4

CONCEPTS, KEY TERMS and DEFINITION:

 Cable- type of guided transmission medium

 UTP- Unshielded Twisted Pair cable
 STP- Shielded Twisted Pair cable
 LASER- Light Amplification Simulated Emission of Radiation
 Fiber optics- network cables made of glass or plastic for high
performance data networking telecommunication
 Coaxial- cable with a protected single inner conductor

INTRODUCTION:
One essential component of telecommunication is cabling. Cabling
may refer to specification, installation, and maintenance of cables,

Wireless communication makes use of electromagnetic waves that

lose energy with distance, hence, at long distances like across vast oceans,
cables are used.
7
LESSON 1 – Types of Cables

Cables are the medium through which information usually moves

from one network to another. Networking cables are networking
hardware used to connect one network device to other network
devices or to connect two or more computers to share printer,
scanners, etc.

There several types of cables commonly used with local area

networks (LAN), namely:

 Unshielded Twisted Pair (UTP)

 Shielded Twisted Pair (STP)
 Coaxial Cable
 Fiber Optics Cable
The UTP is the most popular and generally the best option for
school networks.

The UTP is a cable of wires that are twisted to reduce noise or crosstalk.
9
STP

Shielded Twisted Pair

The STP is a twisted pair cable confined in a foil or mesh
shield that guards the cable against electromagnetic
interference.
10

Coaxial
Coaxial Cable
Cable
The coaxial cable has an inner conductor surrounded by a concentric Connector
conducting shield with the two separated by a dielectric. Many cables
also have a protective center sheath or jacket.
11

Fiber optics cables are network cables that contain one or more
transparent optical fibers which pass light. The optical fibers are
typically glass or plastic pipes contained in a protective tube
suitable for long distance, very high performance data networking
telecommunication.

A key advantage of this cable is superior performance in terms of

bandwidth and data carrying performance.

LASER (Light Amplification for Simulated Emission of Radiation) is used

In optical fiber communication because it has a single frequency.
12

Fiber Optics Submarine Cable

There are 1.1 million km of cable in the ocean floor.

TPC 3 is the first submarine cable in the Pacific.
