What Is an Early
Childhood Director?
An early childhood director is responsible for the day-to-
day operations of a preschool, daycare, or another early
childhood program. Responsibilities include staff
supervision, meeting with parents, addressing enrollment
issues, and signing off on marketing and informational
materials for the program or schoolHere
Early Childhood Director must:
1. Ensuring the Facility is Safe and Effective

Parents choose to send their children to child care for a variety of

reasons, but every parent does so with the expectation that their child
will be safe, valued, and loved. Parents also expect their children will
be prepared for kindergarten.
2. OVERSEEING THE HIRING AND TRAINING OF NEW
STAFF MEMBERS

A director will also be directly involved in the hiring and training of

new staff members, this means writing and posting job descriptions,
scheduling interviews, and evaluating candidates. During the hiring
process, the director needs to ensure they are finding not just qualified
candidates, but also candidates who fit with the philosophy and
culture of their program
3. Conflict Resolution

Child care directors are bosses and may need to get involved in conflict
resolution, either between teachers or between teachers and parents. Early
care and education is a deeply personal field and profession (both due to the
nature of the work and due to the relationships formed between educators and
families), and with that will come interpersonal conflict.
4. Building Strong Family Connections

For directors that double as classroom teachers (as is usually the case in
family child care), parents will want to hear right from you about their
child’s development. For a director in a center who is overseeing many
classrooms, the parents will want to hear directly from their child’s
teachers.

development.
Waldorf

This preschool program is based on the teachings of Austrian

writer Rudolf Steiner, and it strives to nurture a child's spirit,
soul, body, and interests. The Waldorf program involves creative,
hands-on group learning with a focus on rhythmic repetition in a
supportive environment.
REGGIO EMILIA

Reggio Emilia schools formed in Italy in the 1940s, and many preschool
programs embrace this open-ended and child-led philosophy today. With an
emphasis on exploration, the program focuses on the importance of
community and self-expression.
HIGHSCOPE

The HighScope Preschool Curriculum uses a carefully designed

approach called active participatory learning. Children have
hands-on experiences with their surroundings, which fosters the
development of problem-solving tactics

This developmental approach is based on the educational philosophy of

John Dewym, and it focuses on a child's mental, social, emotional, and
physical growth. In these preschool programs, the child is an active

experience, consider a cooperative preschool, where parents
and caregivers can work closely with the classroom teachers.
