REKINDELING OUR

LOVE WITH ACTION

1 CORINTO 13:8
8

8
Love never fails. But where there are
prophecies, they will cease; where there are
tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge,
it will pass away
Background of 1 Corinthians 13
The Corinthian church was a bit of a mess—riddled with divisive,
competitive quarrels and led by a reliance on human wisdom. John
MacArthur explains that the Corinthians did not have many
doctrinal issues; rather, they just struggled to
love one another.
Originally written to believers in Corinth, 1 Corinthians 13 sits squarely in
the center of a conversation about spiritual gifts. Chapter 12 tells us various
spiritual gifts are distributed to each member of the Body, in order that
everyone may work together. Chapter 14 instructs how the Church is
to practice those gifts. But chapter 13 articulates the necessary context
for those spiritual gifts to actually edify believers: love.
Paul calls it “the more excellent way” (1 Cor. 12:31).
How do we rekindle our love
through action?
We must understand the necessity of love. (13:1-
3)

tumatagingting. 2 Kung may kakayahan man akong maghayag
3 At kahit
We must understand the nature of Love (13:4-7)

4
7
matiyaga, laging nagtitiwala, laging may pag-asa,
at tinitiis ang lahat.
Love is patient (Mapagtiis).
Love is patient. The word picture is that of suffering long toward
another. Love means that we will exercise patience in our attitudes
and actions toward each other.

Proverbs 15:18
18 A hot-tempered person stirs up conflict, but the one who is
patient calms a quarrel.

Romans 15:1
"We who are powerful need to be patient with the weakness of those
who don’t have power, and not please ourselves."
Love is kind (Mabait).
Love is kind. Act of goodwill; beneficence; any act of benevolence
which promotes the happiness or welfare of others.

Ephesians 4:32
32 Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just
as in Christ God forgave you.

Luke 6:35
“But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in
return, and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most
High, for he is kind to the ungrateful and the evil.”
.
Love does not envy (Mainggitin).
Love does not envy. The sin of jealousy over the blessings and
achievements of others, especially the spiritual enjoyment and advancement of
the kingdom of Christ freely and graciously bestowed upon the people of God.

Proverbs 23:17
Do not let your heart envy sinners, but always be zealous for the fear
of the LORD.

Galatians 5:26
Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying each
other.
Love does not boast nor is arrogant
Proverbs 27:1 ESV
Do not boast about tomorrow, for you do not know
what a day may bring.

Galatians 6:14 ESV

But far be it from me to boast except in the cross of
our Lord Jesus Christ, by which the world has been
crucified to me, and I to the world
Love does not behave rudely. Love does not dishonor
other people. We will tear other people down with our words
because we want them hurt. We are not trying to be hurt others
by our actions.

Love it is not self-seeking. This is an important key to

harmony among Christians. We will not be self-seeking. We will
remember that our lives and our worship and our service is not
about ourselves. Love is not selfish and love does not seek its
own benefits. Love is not demanding.
Love is not easily angered
Love is not irritable. Love is not easily angered or provoked. We are not
going to be set off quickly because someone makes a mistake.

James 1:19-20
19 My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this:
Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and
slow to become angry,
20 because human anger does not produce the
righteousness that God desires.
Love does not keep a record of wrongs

Love does not keep a record of wrongs. We do not store up in

our minds all the wrongs committed against us. Christians are
not to be resentful or bitter, which comes from keeping a
record of wrongs.
Verse 5 says that love “keeps no record of wrongs.” Or,
as the Amplified Bible translates it, “It takes no
account of the evil done to it [it pays no attention to
a suffered wrong].”
Colossians 3:13-14 (ESV)
13 bearing with one another
and, if one has a complaint
against another, forgiving
each other; as the Lord has
forgiven you, so you also
must forgive. 14 And above
all these put on love, which
binds everything together in
perfect harmony.
Love finds no joy in wrongdoing. We will
not be happy to see others sin. We will not
want to see others stumble but will want to
help others spiritual grow.

Love rejoices in the truth. Love is glad to

see others excel in righteousness and
godliness.
The application of our love in action

Matthew 22:36–39
36
“Teacher, which is the great commandment in th
e Law?” 37 And he said to him, g
“You shall love the Lord your God with all your h
eart and with all your soul and with all your mind.
38
This is the great and first commandment. 39 And
h
a second is like it: i
You shall love your neighbor as yourself.
