Hello

I’m Bug!

I’m an African flower beetle.

I live in the African savanna.

Come and find out more about where I live!

Africa is a continent.

A continent is a huge area of

land on planet Earth.
Africa is made up of 54
different countries!
About half of Africa
is covered in savanna.
A savanna is a large area of grassland with
a few trees.

It is warm all year. It doesn’t rain very much.

Giraffe

I have lots of friends in the African savanna.

Would you like to meet them?
Giraffes
This is my friend Giraffe.

Giraffes are very tall. They are the tallest

animals in the African savanna.

They have very long necks. This helps them to

reach the yummy leaves in the tall trees.

Giraffes have brown patterns on their skin.

Every giraffe has a different pattern!

Cranes
This is my friend Crane.

Cranes are large birds with long legs

and long necks.

My friend is a grey crowned crane. These

cranes have a ‘crown’ of golden feathers on
their heads.

The grey crowned crane is the national bird

of Uganda. Uganda is a country in Africa.
The crane is on the Ugandan flag.

Elephants
This is my friend Elephant.

The African elephant is the biggest land

animal on earth.

An elephant has a long trunk. Elephants use

their trunks to breathe and to pick things up.

Elephants use their trunks to pick up sand

and mud. They throw it onto their backs.
This helps to protect their skin from getting
sunburnt!

Lions
This is my friend Lion.

Lions are big cats.

Lions live in groups called a

‘pride’. There are about 15 lions in
a pride.

Male lions have manes but females

do not. This thick hair protects a
male’s head if he gets into a fight.

Zebras
This is my friend
Zebra.

A zebra is a stripy black-and-white animal.

It’s very similar to a horse.

Zebras live in large groups. A group of

zebras is called a ‘dazzle’.

Zebras eat grass. They often travel for

miles looking for grass and water.

Previous Next
Hippo
This is my friend
Hippo.

Hippos live in rivers and lakes. The water

helps them to stay cool. It also stops their
skin from getting sunburnt.

A hippo’s eyes, nose and ears are all on top

of its head. This helps it to see, hear and
breathe while it’s in the water.

Hippos usually leave the water at night to

eat. They like to eat grass.

Warthog
This is my friend Warthog.

Warthogs are a type of pig.

A male warthog is a boar. A female is a sow.

A baby is a piglet.

Warthogs have four big tusks. They can use these to defend
themselves if another animal attacks them!

Steenbok Antelope
This is my friend Antelope.

Antelopes are furry animals with hooves. My friend is a steenbok

antelope. Only the male steenboks have horns.

An antelope’s horn is made of bone and keratin. Keratin is the

same thing that human fingernails are made of!

Steenboks have big ears and big eyes. This helps them to spot any
danger nearby.

There can be many thousands of
them in one herd!

Gazelle
This is my friend
Gazelle.

Gazelles are another kind of antelope. My friend is a

Thomson’s gazelle. Both the males and females have
horns.

Gazelles are very fast. This helps them to run away from
other animals that might try to eat them!

Gazelles sleep for just five minutes at a time! In total,

they only sleep for about an hour a day.

Rhino
This is my friend
Rhino.

Rhino is short for ‘rhinoceros’.

‘Rhinoceros’ means ‘nose horn’.

All rhinos have horns on their faces.

These horns are made from keratin –
just like an antelope’s horn!

A group of rhinos is called a ‘crash’.

Baboon
This is my friend Baboon.

Baboons are large monkeys. There are different types of

baboon. My friend is a hamadryas baboon!

Baboons eat grass, seeds and fruit. They also eat insects,
fish, birds and even other monkeys!

They have shorter tails than other monkeys. This means

that they don’t use their tails for gripping and swinging
like some monkeys do.
