 ETHICS
They are the standard principles of human behaviour that are
accceptable in a given society

 MEDICAL ETHICS
Medical ethics refers to the principles guiding the behaviour and
conducts of medical practitioners. These guides and principles
governs the practice of medicine.
EXAMPLES OF MEDICAL ETHICS
 JUSTICE OR FAIRNESS
Justice refers giving all patients regardless of their status
equal treatment and access to health center resources

 AUTONOMY
Giving the room for patients to make decisions for themselves, if
they have the capability to do so, without imposing any choice on
them

 NON – MALEFICENCE
Non – maleficence means doing no harm . That is being cognizant
of the fact that your actions and services do not cause any harm to
patients after achieving the main aim.

 BENEFICENCE
Beneficence means doing good. Thus, being aware that your
medical interventions bring good results as a medical practitioner.

 CONFIDENTIALITY
This means keeping information of a patient secure from the third
party

Competency elaborate on the ability of medical practitioners to portray
high level of quality health service to the patient

 CASE ONE
 A young lady came to the hospital complaining of malaria,
whiles the physician was taking some vital informations
concerning about her situation, another 16 years girl too was
rushed inside there with severe difficulty in breathing, the
physician realized it was asthma so he quickly run down for
the Malaria patient and rushed to care for the one suffering
from the asthma.

Report
Justice was ensured because the physician treated them fairly
by taking care of the one with the serious case first

Case Two
A 22 year old girl came into the consulting room with a severe stomach
pains, the doctor just asked her to lay down on a bed for a short examination
on the stomach. The lady laid down and he brought screening to block the
view so that she won't be exposed

Report
Privacy was ensured because the lady was screened.
Autonomy was breached because the physician did not seek for consent
from the patient before examining her

Case Three
A woman was admitted to the hospital with a diagnosis of
diarrhoea, she was put on a drip, after the drip finished she told
the physician to discharge her to go home so that she can go
and look after her kids. The physician explained to her that she
will need two more drips because of her dehydration and so he
cannot allow her to go, but the patient was still insisting so the
physician refused to let her go.

Report
Paternalism was ensured because the physician uses his own
powers to take the decision for the person's benefit.

Case Four
We were in a consulting room having some discussion with the
physician, a patient walked in there and the physician asked us
to excuse them. After they finished and the patient left, we
came inside continuing with our discussion, in a course of that
and we asked the physician what was the health problem the
patient brought and he told us the conversation is between
him and the patient and nobody else

Confidentiality was ensured because the physician did not allow us to
hear what they discussed.

Case five
We were at the ward and witnessed a conversation between a
nurse and a patient suffering from diabetic foot ulcer, she told the
patient that she has left the particular drug she will be using to
dress the wound so she is going to bring it and will be back in the
next ten minute The patient waited for more that thirty minutes but
the nurse did not show up.

Report
Fidelity was breached because the nurse broke the trust the patient
had for her by not following the time she ensured the patient.

Case six
An old woman was admitted to the hospital, during the course of treatment, a
nurse administered a drug to the patient, within a space of time, the patient
felt some stomach ache and it was later discovered that the drug was out of
date.

Reports

Medical negligence was committed because the nurse did not check the expiry
date before administrating the drug.
Non maleficence was breached because harm was done.
FINDINGS AND REPORT

Case seven
On our way out of the hospital, a taxi drove in with a
collapsed child with the grandmother, because the woman
is not strong enough we saw a male nurse rushed towards
the taxi and lift the child to the emergency unit.

Report
Beneficence was ensured because the nurse did good by
helping the woman to lift her grandchild into the
emergency ward
