Intro
→ Cardinal is used to count or indicate how many while ordinal are words
that represent rank and order in a set, scale of preference and the marginal
rate of substitution.
Meaning of Indifference Curve
→ The ordinal utility function means the utilities obtained from goods can be compared as
being greater or less or equal through the level of satisfaction.
→ The scale of preference is the quantitative expression of consumer’s desire for goods.
→ It shows the way in which an individual consumer decides to spend his money income
on various commodities.
ASSUMPTIONS
→ Rationality
→ Ordinal Utility
→ Diminishing marginal rate of substitution
→ Based on comparison
→ Consistency

Intrepretation
→ The consumer in question hopes to get the same amount of total satisfaction from different combination of oranges
and bananas.
→ For eg: the satisfaction from a combination of oranges and 2 bananas is the same as that from 36 oranges and 3
bananas or from 29 oranges and 4 bananas and so on.
→ The same combinations are plotted by joining them we get an indifference curve.
→ Thus, for each additional bananas, the consumer is ready to give up a smaller number of oranges and similarly for
each additional orange, he is ready to give up a smaller quantity of bananas.
