THE EFFECT OF PARTIAL SHEAR CONNECTION IN HOGGING
MOMENT REGIONS OF COMPOSITE BEAMS AND JOINTS

ABSTRACT
This paper presents the results of an extensive experimental program designed to consider the effects of partial shear
connection for beams and joints subjected to hogging moments.

The experimental program elucidates some important concepts and highlights the benefits that may be attributable
when the use of partial shear connection is invoked. In particular the experiments illustrate that the effect of partial
shear connection provides increased rotational capability without a significant compromise in strength.

3
INTRODUCTION
Throughout the hogging moment regions of a continuous composite steel-concrete structure, the concrete is usually
considered to be cracked in tension and therefore it is assumed to contribute minimally to the ultimate flexural strength
at the critical cross-section.
In the existing Australian Standard for composite structures (Standards Australia, 2003), any level of shear connection
greater than 50 % can be specified for simply-supported beams, however guidelines for continuous structures are not
available at present. Eurocode 4 (European Committee for Standardisation, CEN 1992) contains provisions for the
design of shear connection in the sagging moment regions with respect to span length and this requires full shear
connection (FSC) to be used for spans greater than 25 meters.

The appplication of partial shear connection (PSC) in hogging moment regions is anticipated to provide ductility in
beams and joints but requires that the connectors do not fracture prematurely due to excessive slip.

4
EXPERIMENTS

The Experiments program described herein was designed to consider two different forms of construction, which
included continuous beams in hogging bending; and semi - continuous beams in hogging bending. This was achieved
by testing simply supported beams in an inverted configuration. The two test series are herein described as:

- continuous beams experiments (to simulate composite beams in hogging bending)

- semi - continuous beams experiments (to simulate semi - continuous beams in hogging bending)

RESULTS

7
testing procedure for continuous beam experiments

The experiments were carried out using a 1000kN hydraulic actuator, with an available stroke of 250 mm in the
configuration as shown in figure 2. Each beam was carefully inverted upside-down and the vertical load was applied on the
steel flange as a concentrated force at mid-span. Any out-of-plane movement or side-sway was prevented by a frame column
on one side and significant lateral bracing on the orther. Load control was used in all tests.

10
testing procedure for semi – continuous composite beam experiments
The set-up the test frame used in the experiments was similar to those used for the continuous composite beam experiments, except the
load was applied to the central column, rather than through the flange of the beam. The total specimen length was 3.2 meters but it
rested on supports at 2.7 meters between their centres. At one end, the support prevented any displacement whereas the other support
sat on a roller bearing. Any lateral movement and side-sway was effectively prevented by a pair of frame column on one side of the
beam and four lateral braces spaced evenly on the other side.
