Linear Equations and Inequalities

 The junior class sells discount cards as a fundraiser. Each $20 discount card is valid for a year and
provides discounts at many area businesses.

 If n represents the number of cards that students sold last year, write an algebraic expression
showing:
Hieu: 20n
 The revenue from last year (how much money they made): _____________________

 Number of cards sold this year if students sell 200 more cards than last year: _____________________
Son: n + 200
 Revenue this year if students sell 200 more cards than last year: _____________________
Ly: 20n+4000

20(n+200)
Solving Linear Equations

 Solutions – the value of the variable that makes the equation true.

 If the students this year made $10,400, how many discount cards did they sell?
 We have to solve the equation .
 What are the steps to do this?
How many tickets did students sell this year?
 Steps to solve:
 1) Get the variables together Quoc Bao: n=320
Is Quoc Bao correct? Yes/No in the chat
 2)Get the variable alone
Correct answer: 520
 3) Get rid of any coefficients on the variable
Solving Linear Inequalities

 Solved the same was as equations with 1 exception.

 If you multiply or divide by a negative number, you must reverse the inequality.

Solution Sets

 Inequalities will have sets for solutions instead of single values

 Graphing solution sets will have specific notation to use

Example

 Square A has a smaller perimeter than Rectangle B.

 Write a linear inequality showing the relationship

between the perimeters.

 Graph the solution set.

 Next year’s junior class wants to do better on the discount card Cards sold:
520+80x
fundraiser. They did some research, and found for every $2 they
reduce $20 price they do, they will sell 80 more cards. Pham Ha
Expression for
 How many reductions in price can they do and still make a Price: 20 – 2x
revenue of $10,400? Revenue = (#sold)(price)
Thuc Anh:
10400=(520+80x)(20-2x)
 Call the number of discounts given. How can we write the cost 10400=10400+1600x-1040x-
of the discount cards? 160x^2
10400=-160x^2+560x+10400
0=-160x^2+560x
 How can we write the expected revenue for next year? (note: they X=0 or x=560/160=3.5
sold 520 cards last year) Or discount $7.
Solving Quadratic Equations

 There are 4 ways / scenarios where we can solve quadratics: Standard Form:

Just square root both

sides…
Use the formula to solve
Factor it, then set any quadratic equation.
each factor = 0. Solve
for x.

When it cannot be factored easily. Move constant

to 1 side, cut the b coefficient in half + square it,
add to both sides. Solve by square rooting both
sides.
Examples

Dan
Write the equation:
x^2=8x-16
x=4

 The square of a number, , is 16 less than 8 times a number. What is the number?

 >=0 When you have a quadratic inequality, just pretend it is an equal

sign and test the regions around the 2 solutions.
